What is my connection

I think I have FTTC (so copper to our house). I get speeds of around 50mbps around our house on WiFi and I get Broadband from BT. I have attached photos of the box on the wall and my modem that connects to my Smart Hub 2 via Ethernet. I am thinking of switching to Sky or Plusnet but am worried about a drop in speed if I do so. I am even more confused as the Plusnet chap on chat said I would be going from BT cable to copper if I switch to them. I thought all these providers were supplied via BT Openreach and as full fibre isnt available in our area yet all speeds would be similar for the Superfast fibre.

The top picture looks like a very old openreach modem. If you change to sky you will get a combined modem/router hub.

If you enter your full postal address below and post the table after removing your address from the image we would get a better idea of your speeds

That's a Huawei EchoLife HG612 which goes back to the early days of FTTC: the handbook at manualslib.com is dated 2009.  I'm surprised BT haven't insisted you change to a HomeHub 5 or 6.

Would it pre date g.inp?

I've seen a couple for sale alongside instructions to upgrade to g.inp

He's not with BT, he's with Plusnet who are both useless and clueless. Also not long for this world from what I hear.

There's a community online dedicated to unlocking and flashing those things.  Some people have too much time on their hands.

Re: What is my connection

Thanks both, I dont mind having a separate modem and touter as I have a 3 storey house and my BT Smart Hub 2 is on the middle floor to give maximum WiFi coverage. The broadband status is below :-

A Smart Hub 2 has its own modem: every BT Hub has had for many generations.  You might even squeeze a little more speed out of an FTTC connection by using a modem made in the past decade.

Re: What is my connection

Thanks Timmy, that helps. I could replace the Openreach Modem I showed in the photo with my Smart Hub 2 (as a modem) and then use my Asus Router I used up to recently on the middle floor if you think this may help?

Ah, not so much: BT, like Sky, don't see fit to equip their Hubs with a modem-only mode.

Re: What is my connection

Ahh ok, I am in negotiation mode with BT so could ask for a modem upgrade if there is one.

If I went with Sky or Plusnet would they work with the Openreach modem, they wouldnt insist on the broadband cable going in to their combined modem/router would they?
