Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Hi

I'm sure this has been answered multiple times but for anyone still struggling with lag I've a possible solution

I've had the same issue... Playing rainbow 6.. Every few seconds there would be a lag I tried the new fifa (ea sports) lag every few seconds and then it would speed up. I tried all possible online solutions and found no answer. However what fixed mine was my ps5 was right next to my sky q box, this was undoubtedly my issue because once I disconnected the sky q box the issues disappeared after almost 7 months.

So one possible solution is if your ps5 is right next to an appliance which also using the WiFi, this could be causing the interference.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Hi there,

I've read through all the threads for advice and not found much advice that would solve the issues.

The house I'm living in has recently had Sky Fibre installed, and subsequently the main router being moved into another room. I used to use Ethernet (Great connection) but now I am stuck without it. I am getting horrendous connection on my PlayStation 5 as well as my PC. I've tried using Ethernet into mini boxes, which has made it worse. Without Ethernet, Sky seems like it cannot provide a good Wi-Fi service for consoles for online gaming. I've attached a screenshot of what I'm experiencing (high ms), and have plenty of videos of constant speed up lag on all games, and it's completely ruined my mood for the past month.

I'm not sure how upgrading to Fibre has made everything so much worse.

Any advice that doesn't involve spending more money on Amazon products would be much appreciated.

@wduke2000

Its nothing to do with your fibre connection its the fact you've gone from using ethernet to WiFi for gaming which isnt ideal at all. Depending on your location it could be that you have a lot of competing wireless routers around you or many devices in your home causing interference. Have you considered using powerline adapters to connect your console?

Nothing anyone can do if you use wifi . Sky seems to have gave customers a terrible router for something most people do on a daily basis, game . Sky will be getting ditched when out of contract after 14 years as a customer unfortunately .

@Lauren111 Any ISP supplied router (unless it's from an aftermarket supplier, like Zen choose to do) is always going to be very average at best, especially when it comes to something like gaming. However, as other posts in the thread point out, anyone serious about gaming will always use a cable, nothing to do with an ISP supplying not good enough kit, but because of physics.

Wi-Fi uses radio waves. These are very susceptible to fluctuations/physical objects/other devices transmitting on the same frequencies that all clog the airwaves.

A cable, i.e Ethernet, is not subject to any such issues, and will give a far more solid, stable connection which is what gaming requires, as it is very sensitive to instability, that is inherent when using Wi-Fi.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

I totally get that but I'm not buying it to be honest . My friends use bt / ee , no lag spikes and dropped internet like sky on ps5 playing the exact same games . I don't expect it to be perfect by any means but games like fortnite is unplayable and it's consistent .

my router is basically 10 feet away from the console with no obstructions  , doesn't matter where I place it . Its got to be something with the sky set up or the router , internet generally seems fine with a constant speeds.

Re: PS5 terrible lag on Sky Broadband!

Just want to highlight a very easy fix, mentioned by someone earlier in the thread. We were having lag spikes on PS5 over wifi, but just going into PS5 settings > Network > select your router, then press the option button, then select wifi band > 5ghz fixed it for us. Essentially the PS5 default is auto mode, which swaps between 2.4ghz to try and find the best signal, but during gaming this causes stuttering/lags/freezing. Problem solved without having to buy expensive solutions.

@Kingfish+DG the 2.4GHz band is far more affected by interference as the band can only 3 or at most 4 networks without interference being an issue. The shorter range 5GHz band is less affected because it has less range. It is also potentially faster.

However anything other than casual gaming should be done over cabelled connections.

Certainly better over a wired ethernet connection but 5Ghz only, especially 802.11ax wifi 6 isn't too bad at close range... 😀

Unless they come up with a PS5+ that supports wifi 6 or even better wifi 6E then you are going to have issues using wireless on a PS5 with any wireless router as it only supports 802.11ac 5Ghz maximum on PS5.

@mae-3 sure as long as there is no malfunctioning electrical gear in range. Given uo trying to list what can cause issues. At least Christmas lights seem less of an issue since leds became normal.

Christmas lights that are LED are fine. I'm an expert in interference spoting with SDR and I'm a licensed radio amateur. 😀

Another interesting fact is radio amateurs on the 2.4Ghz & 5Ghz band from next year will be able to use equipment in this band at a power of 2W for wireless routers instead of the 200mW! 😀

@mae-3 that I had not heard of. Expect an increased number of posts complaining about wifi not working.

I made myself somewhat unpopular by shredding Sky's "Minion proof wifi" claim at a meeting a year or so back with Sky's Broadband managers although a couple of engineers seemed sympathetic.

Ah, radio amateurs are good at solving interference issues and there are only about one hundred three thousand of us in the UK. 😀
