Hey foks.
i have a Sky Q Hub router and mesh (1 main Sky Q box, 2 addtl Qs and 1 extender). Mesh works well today but am on SKY ADSL (88mbps).
I just had VDSL from OpenInfra installed with a Nokia router (model G240-G) (the point where fibre comes into house) and an Icoterra wifi router provided too (model: i4580-00).
i dont really want or need to replace my Mesh as it works fine (we get consistent speeds c. 80mbps everywhere), but unsure how to connect everything together.
my first idea was simply replace the Q router with the new icoterra router but change the SSID & password to match the old sky router and hope it tricks everything into just connecting.
open to better suggestions.
Thanks

You can hard wire any Q box back to your third party router. If you have a Sky booster it can only be linked to the hot spot signal from the main Q box. The Q mini can also only be connected by wifi to that hotspot - the process is explained in the link I gave. If its too far away the booster can help. The hotspots are effectively not usable for your other devices.

Your Q boxes will need to be re-networked see https://www.sky.com/help/articles/setting-up-sky-q-connect-to-third-party-router
The Q boxes wifi hotspots will still be there but connecting your other devices becomes complicated and frankly is probably not worth the effort as it is limited to the 2.4GHz band. I would suggest you are better buying a third party mesh solution for those devices but the Q minis have either to connect to the Sky mesh signal from your main Q box or be connected by ethernet.

Thanks!
so just to be clear: if i ethernet connect the main Sky Q box will the Sky mesh work? or do those minis connect back to my Sky Router vs Sky Q hub? (one of the minis is in any case connected via ethernet to the router, but 1 mini and 1 extender are wifi only)
i get the point re: 2.4Ghz vs 5Ghz and may eventually replace the mesh, but for now, that is a project too far!

Hi
I know the original question was nearly a year ago, but I'm now in the same position and would like some help. I am quite old and not remotely tech-literate, so if anyone sees this, please reply as if talking to a child. What I want to know is, when I switch on Open Infra, can I have a situation where my Sky minis are getting a signal from the main Sky box, but everything else in the house is essentially on a different network? I hope that makes sense.
Thanks

Thank you. And the main sky box will still talk to the minis?

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out moreYes. There are two options
1. Switch hotspotting off which stops your devices connecting to the Sky Q boxes
2. Switch WiFi off completely on the Q boxes, this would result in you having to connect all of them by ethernet.
