You were incorrectly advised.
As you have found, Sky and Virgin broadband networks are not connected in any way and the proposed "one call" switching service is not yet in place.
Did you have a phone service with Virgin ?
Only if you had asked to port a phone number would Virgin have a scoobie about you leaving and then may have contacted you regarding your intentions.
You'll have to cancel Virgin yourself.

Virgin and the altnet fibre-optic ISPs were due to have joined the Ofcom one-touch switch system in April this year, but that project has run into significant bureaucratic and technical issues and so has not yet been implemented.
