Phone Swap New Contract?

If I'm upgrading my phone at 24 months (for 36 month contract), do I get roped into another contract e.g. do I now have another 24/36 month contract for upgrading to a new device or do I only have my remaining 12 months left on my contract?

You would start a new contract against your new device as you old one would either be paid off or if there is an extra to pay against it then it would be added to your next available bill.
