For difficulty with lost sky.com mail access

My old Samsung phone needed replacing with a new one. On transferring my personal data and apps, I lost the use of my sky.com mailbox - because Sky no longer subs out to Yahoo and albeit existing sky.com mailboxes continue to remain functional, new ones cannot be created. This is because a password has to be independently generated, specifically by Yahoo and they no longer do this.

And neither can existing functional mailboxes be installed on alternative devices because of this password issue. Random password generators do not work, as the sky mailbox is specific to Yahoo. I tried several lengthy calls to Sky tech and spent hours of research on the web, because my sky mailbox remains my main mail account, from years of use and establishment of my contact data base.

I went for weeks without the sky mailbox on my phone whilst it remained active on my laptop.

I use Thunderbird as my mail app. on my laptop. I found that it is possible to locate the random password that was generated by Yahoo when I originally created the mail account. I used that selfsame password on my laptop for my new phone and HEY!!! Hope it works for you too

Had you bothered to ask here, we would have happily have told you how do it. Still, aparently, you knew better.

@Snappy

For your Sky email address you do not generate a 16 digit password via Yahoo as you do it via this link with Sky:

Re: For difficulty with lost sky.com mail access

Please check your suggestion, because a) I tried this before you submitted it and b) as previously, it states that I do not have a sky account.  My suggestion to others worked for me and perhaps it will work for them too. Thanks

I did read your post as it isn't clear why you lost your Sky email account because if you were logging in online to it then you should still have access to it so what happens when you login here to it:

Re: For difficulty with lost sky.com mail access

  • Your link above, informs me that I cannot create a new mail account. To try and be clear. I have a functional sky mailbox. I retained it on my laptop and lost access to it on my phone when I replaced the phone. I couldn't restore it on the phone because I needed a password and couldn't create one. So I tried using the same log in password that works on my laptop. And it worked. Hopefully that makes sense. Thanks.

Glad you have it working and the reason why your usual password might work with this new phone as not all apps require a generated password so while perhaps your old one did doesn't mean that this new phone or any other you might get in the future will.

Re: For difficulty with lost sky.com mail access

I stumbled across this workaround and thought I'd share it, as I realised that I couldn't have been the only with the issue. It had nothing to do with the phone per se. Just the sky.com mail client on the Yahoo mail servers.

Sorry  but the statements in original post are incorrect.

It is true new Sky email addresses can not be created, but that will be a decision by Sky, not Yahoo, and Yahoo have never had anything to do with Sky passwords.

There is no problem adding Sky email accounts to new devices, the way to do it depends on whether the device/app is OAuth compliant with Sky|Yahoo email or not.

It is likely that you were able to re-use the password from Thunderbird as it is probably using a generated password, and not OAuth.

But thank you for posting your experience, it may well help others.

Re: For difficulty with lost sky.com mail access

To those non-superusers who may find my story to be of use, I'm pleased if I have helped you in any way.  It seems I have been misunderstood by those above my level of capability in the world of the Sky community.  Simply put: MY sky.com email address was serviced by Yahoo and functioned via their servers. The passwords for accessing MY private email account were individually generated by Yahoo for each device on which I installed MY email. I have simply described MY experience. Thanks.

No, the generated passwords for Sky are generated by Sky here:

https://www.sky.com/sky-yahoo-mail/manage-apps (the link does work)

Yahoo generated passwords ( https://help.yahoo.com/kb/generate-manage-rd-party-passwords-sln15241.html ) do not work on Sky.

If you use the link on their webpage, using a Sky login, it will take you to Sky to generate it.

Just posting to ensure others reading your posts are not given misleading information.

Re: For difficulty with lost sky.com mail access

No. Well then, if you have a non-operative mailbox and that works for you. Wonderful. It didn't for me. That link shows that my account is closed. Sky's next level techs couldn't help me, after hours of trying. But I'm impressed by your knowledge. Thanks

Yep. Never knew you existed. Sorry you're upset by my trying to help others through my personal experiences. I won't do that again, here.

Yeah Thunderbird does have your password hidden away quite nicely in "accounts" but when you find it, it's readable, like in a browser password manager.

I'm surprised the Android phone transfer didn't take your existing password along with the mail account to the new phone.

Me too. But you do have to say it is a Yahoo account, or use a generated password.
