Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

@AJCrowley Sky do not use the mac address in authentication so there is no need to clone the address from your Sky hub the identification is done by using the line id. If you have connected using DHCPv6 PD correctly the lease should renew autimatically. However keep the Sky hub around as Sky's diagnostics require it to be connected to get support for some faults.

Honestly this is far simpler than you are making it out to be tens of thousands of Sky customers use 3rd party routers. The only unknown is whether your exchange supports DHCPv6 PD or not.

@2muchTV We will soon find out how the wan renewal went today with his cudy, had never even heard of the brand before as routers new other device from way back in he day, pretty sure either passthrough or slacc will sort out the mode and get it all going correct. Would be better to keep it in router mode and just have his sky as the fall back when issues arise and the head scratching begins.

@Chrisee Was going to spring it on him later but did not wish to throw too much up at once.

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

Well, it's been 24 hours since I plugged in the Sky router and I'm still up and running. I'm a little scared to jinx it, and it's hard to accept that such a simple solution would be the answer to my issue after jumping through so many super technical hoops, but I think you called it - SLAAC/DHCPv6 seems to be doing the trick. I'm going to leave it run another 24 hours before I start re-running all of my cables just to be sure.

Thanks so much for the fast responses to my question, and giving me an answer that actually seems to have done the job, it's genuinely appreciated!

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

@AJCrowley That is the trouble with router's and FW and brands off A does such, B does the other and C is completely different. I only had to make two adjustment's on my Asus for the EE to Sky move, Only advice for the next time if you are doing so get a recognised brand you will find way more support, trust the people who have done it all before, don't worry about your mac clone makes no difference to the operation, AND should you need to expand or add additional then STAY with the Cuddy branded parts, they will go together hand and glove, No mix and match of products, just leads to all kinds of head scratching who is doing what!!!!

Park the sky Hub back in it's box, only to appear when you are down hard and cannot decide why you have No connection. 👍

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

Hi, I am just about to switch to Sky fibre 900 from BT 900 (better deal) I have a Netgear R9000 (X10)  router with the latest firmware which does support option 60/61 does anybody know exactly what settings I need to add to the R9000 (X10)  and where these are located? Many thanks in advance

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

@MMMIIIUUUT The netgear user manual will show you what you need, and the Mer option 60/61 if you need it username/password as anything@skydsl|anything

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

There is nothing in the manual what so ever about option 61 or MER.

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

@MMMIIIUUUT So would expect for you to see it on the Wan settings screen somewhere! That is where Asus have popped it and marked as a DHCP Option for fields option 60 and option 61.., See post 4 above!

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

@MMMIIIUUUT If i was you would be forgetting all about the Mer option and trying the DHCPv6 PD first and foremost. then you do not need anything else for the netgear to authenticate against!

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

I have looked on the software and actually can not see an option for MER only the normal Pop..... etc.

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

@MMMIIIUUUT Think you where the one that said you Netgear fully supported it! you may not see it with your current PPPoE connection on BT!

You need to wait, get the hub that sky send you online as that is your crutch when issues arise, and once you have it all up and working would setup your Netgear wan to lan on the sky hub, use and setup the Netgear wired router mode and get it all working correctly.

Once you know it is up and working then sky out/netgear on and tweak the router operation that MAY possibly be required.

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

I will let you know, only quoting o what the Netgear forum has and an official list of Netgear routers that support option60/61 and MER!

Re: Using my own router instead of Sky supplied

@MMMIIIUUUT If you are not getting what is said then YOU MAY not even need to use MER option at all!

Does your Netgear have a simple first connect option either via a web interface or app based connection where it works itself out what is the best way to connect!

No way your manual will show you anything was last updated back in 2017, and it is FW upfates the introduced MER so no idea when that would have happened, you may just have to look at an update log assuming you kept them all!
