Full fibre upgrade worse than before

I upgraded to full fibre yesterday, but now an app I regularly use freezes, skips and has lots of interference. The broadband / WiFi test comes back as speeds ok. Any advice?

@Se4 while full fibre should improve both speed and stability to the hub it does nothing to improve wifi speeds in your home. Indeed they can get worse if the hub has been moved. Check if the hub is in the best position which is out in the open on a surface above obstructions like radiators if the cable Sky supplied is too short then you can use a longer ethernet cable from the ONT to the hub.

Thanks the hub is in the same place as before, it's at the back of a bookshelf but I had no issues before I upgraded. It's slightly annoying as if anything upgrading had made my experience worse as the only difference I've noticed is the poor wi fi. I'll see if I can move the router

Which hub do you  have,? I have  sky  gigafast broadband 900mps and the sky wifi  max hub, i have had them both since  January  last year  and had no problems  with  it, i have a 55inch sky glass tv  gen 1, a 55inch sky glass tv  gen 2, 43inch  lg tv , sky puck, Xbox, p c, 2 laptops, a tablet, 3 mobile phones, a freesat box and 3 alexers  all connected  to  the  Internet and when family  visit  i can have up to  7 mobiles  connected  to the Internet  no problems  what so ever

It's the standard router but sky and the engineers said that should be fine for full fibre.

No you need the sky wifi  max hub for full fibre, it even show it on the sky website  with that hub to get the best out of the full fibre broadband

I have the same issue, everything in place of my old stuff which was working great, now WiFi max with the white hub and signal and connection around the home has got way worse

Ice got the same problems WiFi max and a booster 300 fibre. They said all tests are fine. Signals poor phones and xboxs keep saying they are not connected to Internet None of the settings for the WiFi hub show up on the app. Fed up with it all I upgraded so my boys could both use their xboxs and it's worse now

Do you have, or have you asked for a booster  pod to go with the hub ? If it's  an old build  house the walls are solid  and not like modern  houses  walls, this could be part of your  problem, if you house was built  before  the second  world war  then the solid brick  interior  walls will block or slow the wifi signal  the booster  pods just plug in  to a socket, i would get sky a ring  and ask for some, hope this helps

As explained in previous posts... the speed to the hub and the WiFi signal from the hub are 2 separate  issues.

Sky can provide equipment for improving the WiFi signal around your home or you might invest money & time in setting up your own mesh system.

Been well worth the effort and expense for me as we often work from home (Zoom & Teams meetings) plus we have  Ring security cameras, smart plugs, smart bulbs, streaming cameras, electric blinds etc.

There are several reasons why the wifi coverage from the new white Sky Max hub maybe worse.

 

First if you have Sky Q boxes these no longer act as WiFi hotspots for your devices - something Sky dont point out. The older Sky boisters are also not compatable instead you need the pod extendrrs Sky can provide as part of the WiFi Max package if asked

 

Secondly as I mentioned in my first post the location of the ONT can mean the hub is not in its best position especially in new builds with "comms cupbaords" which is about the worst possible place. The hub connects to the ONT using an Ethernet lead you can buy these in any length you need. Cat5e is ample as it supports 1Gb/s up to 100m

 

Thirdly the new hub uses the 5GHz band to communicate with its extender pods which has higerr attenuation when passing through solid obstructions than the 2.4GHz band which can be a factor especially if you live in an older property. 

Outside those restrictions tge white hub has very similat range tomthe older black hubs which are the same shape.

Yes new build i have and a stupid comms cupboard all behind a thick wall. Right at the bottom of my stairs by a front door hardly anywhere to pop the wifi hub safely I've had to bring the WiFi box out of the cupboard I've ordered a long ethernet cable and I've a extention lead. I'll have to get a little unit to pop it on.

The house is about 25 years old so not thick walls, I've contacted sky to see what they can do as tbh I had perfectly good broadband for all needs before, including working from home, and it's disappointing if I have to buy any further kit to boost as that wasn't needed before and the whole thing feels less reliable than before. Every day apps I regularly used on my phone, and even things like bbc I player on the tv are not avaliable.

@Raving51  I'm in a 12 year old house with the ONT in the hallway... not the best position for us  but not in a cubboard thankfully. My partner and I tried to get creative and so the hub is hidden behind  and at the bottom of this shoe storage with just the XT9 on top to communicate via WiFi with the other nodes. Works perfectly and fast.

@Se4 I hear you about having to purchase further equipment when the previous system worked OK. Maybe think of it in t this way-  a DIY mesh system (particularly in AP mode) can work with any broadband provider (if and when you decide to change). Also your mesh system can be designed to be much better than anything that ISPs such as Sky can supply. Finally,  depending on the equipment you purchase, you can have greater flexibility, control and tinkering of the network as suits your needs. WhatsApp Image 2025-04-06 at 11.16.27_fdf617ff.jpg

I'll have a look into the having a mesh system I'm on three floors 3 xbox on top floor one on the middle floor one lower floor plus 6 tvs, door bell, few cameras everyone's phones and what ever else it's a nightmare that I need to improve asap
