I been trying to download programs on bbc and other channels but saying I need to upgrade but don't know how I have the top package

All BBC stuff needs to be accessed from the iPlayer.

What you mean what software it's on skyQ I've always been about to record programs on it and now it's saying I need to upgrade

Have you tried a reboot of the box, power down by turning oss at the wall for 30 seconds then reboot the box.

Lots of us new customers with this issue. While you wait for sky to fix, go to settings, setup, preferences and change the download quality to SD. This enables the downloads \ streaming options,

Sky tried a card refresh for me. Didn't help.
said they'd fix in the background.
