I am not looking forwards to losing my ability to record - having had Sky for 23 years
So when this happens - it doesn't seem to be any point in buying my own hard disk recorder - because I need several channels
Which leads me to my question - is Sky planning a new device to record a signal from internet - preferably several channel at the same time ?
I think the closest you will get will be like I think some of the streaming services currently provide which is to download a particular programme to watch on the go with time & other limits on viewing .

Re: Sky Q alternatives
Sincerely doubt it. They don't want you recording anything, they want control over what you have access to
Netflix right now with its no nonsense, no ads service is about as good a service as TV is going to see in our lifetimes.

Note there almost certainly won't be any such devices on the market, because functionality would depend on receiving, storing and playing back encrypted data from external sources that just aren't going to be made available to third party hardware by the online providers.

Re: 2029 - changes to Sky ?
It seems like a retrograde step - losing the ability to record and watch at your leisure . before anyone says it - I know that Steaming is pretty flexible but............
I know that some people prefer streaming but I definitely will miss it - and will have to consider whether it is worth spending so much of my limited income on.

From a consumer point of view. However, the broadcasters see it as an opportunity to control their material (monetisation). Being able to 'force' adverts is also good for 'business'....

And a fundamental point is that broadcast content doesn't belong to the viewer: it's always someone else's property. What we can do with it is ultimately up to the rights owners: local recording on tape and then disk was a brief period of limited exceptions.

Re: 2029 - changes to Sky ?
As an old Wrinkly who has been a user of satellite tv for many years, and remembers the days of and white parabolic, flat square, and rectangular dishes, I have witnessed many changes over the years.
Yes I have done my share of moaning, (why yet another change?) but we all survived, and found ways to still enjoy our television.
Like it or not, we have to accept progress.

Recording from Sky Stream
I understand that in a few years (def by 2030) - Sky will only be available via the internet rather than satellite ?
What is the reason that we will no longer be able to record - and only stream ?
It can't be the speed of transmission because a 100Mbps internet connection can cope with several data transfers at the same time
Is it purely down to licencing changes (Sky don't want customers to have the ability to record ?)
Why don't sky produce a new "recording" box that can operate purely over the internet ?
What will happen at the point when we lose satellite connections - will Sky be ready for millions to transfer at the same point without losing our connections ?

Re: Recording from Sky Stream
This is not just a Sky thing.
Rights holders (of all broadcasters) don't want you to record material.
Access by streaming allows broadcasters to control access to their material - and force income streams (such as adverts - or paying to remove them).
Arguably, with streaming there is no need to record.
Of course, all broadcasters will be planning for the necessary bandwidth.

@Wibbly-Woo And the answers haven't and won't change regardless of how many times you ask them
