What is my Network Connection… 2.4ghz or 5ghz

My question is about what network connection I have.. 2.4ghz or 5ghz?

This seems more complicated than it should be, it's just a plug!,  but.... I bought an Amazon Smart Plug to use as a timer for a lamp. It states that it will only work on a 2.4ghz and not 5ghz. How do I find what I have please. It's driving me up the wall as I can't find answers anywhere!

Info..

I have SKY Q and a SKY router.
iphone

ipad

Has anyone else used one of these plugs with a standard SKY Wi-Fi hub?

Thanks

@LisaLouise

You have both 2.4ghz & 5ghz on the Sky Q hub.

The reason many of these smart devices dont work right away is that they expect to see a single SSID (WiFi Network name) with just 2.4ghz WiFi however the Sky hub broadcasts both the 2.4ghz & 5ghz signal via one SSID which makes it easier day to day for you and your devices but confuses smart devices.

You can follow these instructions to split your WiFi bands which should then allow you to connect the plug.

Depends on your Hub model: the one on the left is 2.4Ghz only while the other two broadcast the same SSID on 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz simultaneously.  As @jamesn123 indicates, with those you'll probably need to unsyncronize the Hub signal and then rename one of the bands by following the linked instructions.

Not really: it's an Alexa-enabled wireless-capable embedded smart device which happens to contain a plug...

Re: What is my Network Connection… 2.4ghz or 5ghz

Thank you both for your help. Seems too complicated for me, and my husband just said I'm not messing around with splitting things up and renaming things and reconnecting. We are both not very good with this kind of thing (him more so than me!!) I thought I just bought a plug that you can just plug in and go, seems not. 😔

Can you recommend something I can buy which is compatible with my hub without having to alter it?

Unfortunately almost all smart plugs/devices have this same issue so you likely wont find one that will just 'work'

As @jamesn123 indicates, it's unfortunately inherent to the cheap chipsets typically used to build such things: cameras and doorbells suffer the same problem.

Sorry but that is aboslute rubbish, I appreciate you wish to help but please don't reply to people with false information, devices that support 2.4ghz or 5 ghz don't care if it is the same SSID, the frequency is completely different, like ships in the night

@Garry+Hanson

Multiple posts on the subject in this forum over many years indicate otherwise.  It's the combination of cheap 2.4Ghz only chipsets in budget devices together with their app controllers encountering the synchronized 2.4 & 5Ghz signal on the same SSID from the Hub which causes the issue: unsynchronizing the bands and renaming one has been demonstrated to be a repeatable and reliable solution.

The key to this is the need to have the phone with the setup app connected to the 2.4GHz band.

I find the easiest way ensure this is to temporarily disable the 5GHz band on the router and then perform the setup. Once the socket is connected and working simply re-enable the 5GHz band.

The socket will remain connected to the 2.4Ghz band and the phone will connect to the band that is best.

I have the same problem had  four smart plugs and every bulb in the house connected to Alexa and virgin but since changing to sky have had to disconnect them all because they won't work off the sky hub.
