The Openreach network is mostly public information. Anyone with an interest or technical knowledge can understand how its built and operates. Just because you dont understand it yourself does not mean Sky are 'blinding you with science'

Re: Very slow wifi speed on all devices, but speed test shows fast

I get your point but nothing changes the facts about the poor performance in relation to what's boasted about and promised by sky, all these stats mean anything it's empty promises compared to what's being received... I know the difference nor (not that you said I was) am I dinosaur or technophobe... Its poor service and marketing relies on blagging people about what they shall and are receiving.... The down load and upload are not fit for purpose and that's the way BT want it they aren't going to do themselves out of a job.... The info and content and quality being sent via signals is too vast for this cheap structure and it can't handle the content.. They just change what everything is called and glean more money just like Companies like iPhone were caught out doing, they also don't update what they sell us and push us to need the next stage access... Say what you want but the definition of what's super fast etc etc etc will always be changed by what you receive

@Proshowme

See what you've just said there is totally different to what you originally said about it all just being throttled and full of greed.

I completely agree with you about Sky's and other ISPs marketing, they promise the world, especially over WiFi, and quite rarely deliver. This is usually down to technical limitations of WiFi or the infrastructure being used but this doesnt cross the mind of the marketers working at Sky and everywhere else.

Re: Very slow wifi speed on all devices, but speed test shows fast

Are you close to your renwal date? i find if your a long time SKY user then your probally on a go slow from SKY, I cant belive in this day of tech we cant seem to get a decent connection.

Sky say try this try that, and dont even get me started on trying to get through to them:(

As SKY are major players in this field they could lose a million customers with this issue and gain the same amount in a very short time by an offer on the TV. If I ruled the world I would build a network that supported people who have been supportive to SKY's domination of eveything entertainment within the house.

It wouldnt supprise me if this post doesnt gets out as right now I have no signal, shame on you SKY!!

I will be changing on subscription date....roll on July

Yes I'm now near renewal I'm likely going back to BT, using my devices in the house are so laborious and stressful, everything is just sluggish SKY just abuse customers and blag them with their snide VIP carry on.. All I want is a proper broadband... 😢 Time to leave

Re: Very slow wifi speed on all devices, but speed test shows fast

Hi,

Thats the reason i asked if you were close to renewal, they seem to do this towards the end so that they can offer you super fast BB, im not hanging around for a free VIP movie 😞 (insulting) People just want items to work, thats all, and even happy to pay for it also.

SKY have lost touch with the people who matter, and just want rolling subscription payers who only use minimum band width.

Good choice to go back to BT, Im heading there myself, not even sure i want three hundred channels to flick through.

Good luck:)

What utter tripe. Why would Sky purposely slow down customers broadband, this only angers the subscriber, creates unnecessary support calls and then likely ends with Sky losing subscribers.

Sky dont even have the ability to lower your speed, its all controlled by the Openreach kit. All they can do is put you on a certain speed package.

Yes indeed I have been a customer for over 11 years . It's been a constant issue though this. Past year or so getting very fed up of having to chase sky to get it sorted. It's almost as if they send you around in circles hoping you get so tired of it u give up .

Re: Very slow wifi speed on all devices, but speed test shows fast

Yea I'm fed up which is why I'm changing it's obvious that BT isn't going to hand over the rains to other companies and they create a stupid firm called Openreach who they think they're fooling BT warned me years ago you're never get the same speeds with Sky so no matter what these people on here say what are experts and the people are trying ridiculous and everything like that one thing we've got an our side is experience and we know when an internet is no good and when it's slow and when it's not doing things properly on your phone and everything takes long to open and Order sluggishness no matter what any expert says on here Skies working their ticket against everybody and to me now with then put in the price up on me by five pound it's time to say see you later

I'm with BT and having the same issue. Been here for 9 years no problems. Switched to fibre optic and since then it's been on off problems. Boys constantly complaining they can't game. Phone won't load, Netflix won't load sky q keeps disconnecting. Engineers have been out numerous times changed the router added more halo discs but still very bad. I'm pulling my hair out cause the speed test say I'm getting 278mg shoukd 700 but engineer says it's 700 at the hub. Not sure if I should swap to another provider as this has been going on nearly a year now.

@mariegodbeer this a complicated subject. If you do get 280Mb/s over wifi that is more than enough for online gaming that actually uses around 10Mb/s, Q boxes which can need under 40Mb/s maximum and as do the vast majority of applications. There is a myth that you need Gigabit speeds through out a home you simply dont in practice. The only thing that can be faster is downloads if the server allows but everyday apps only can use what bandwidth they need.

The technology both BT and Sky use in their standard hubs is called Wifi 5 which is limited to roughly 700Mb/s. There is a newer standard Wifi6 which supports speeds over 1,000Mb/s however both the hub and the device have to support the standard . Sky launched a Wifi 6 compatible hub a couple of weeks back but it won't work with Q boxes as yet. BT have wifi 6 kit as well. Both chargeca premium for the faster hubs and extenders.

Wifi performance in a home is influenced by the layout and type of construction of your home. However there is only so much wifi can do. With gaming latency is more important than bandwidth which is why ethernet cable connections are always preferred to wifi wherever practical.

In summary switching ISPs is unlikely to magical make everything perfect. All fibre services be they from BT, Sky or whoever are broadly the same somdon't be taken in by the hype.

Re: Very slow wifi speed on all devices, but speed test shows fast

We do have wired cables but that doesn't seem to work anymore either so relying on Wi-Fi. We have halo 6 and before fibre was working fine so it's not the layout of the house as it's worked for the past 8 years
