Upgrading to full fibre from part fibre connection

Hi,

I currently have Sky Broadband, which is part fibre and I am on a legacy package: Sky Fibre Max - synced at 80/20.

I am thinking of upgrading my existing broadband connection to full fibre.

My current setup is the following:

Sky Q Hub - model ER110, connected to my computer via Ethernet cable, located upstairs in the back room.

I also have different devices using the hub's WiFi, both 2.4GHz and 5GHz frequency bands.

My Sky Q Hub is located in the same upstairs room as my computer and I would like to keep this setup if possible.

I have looked at the different connectivity options  that I would be able to use to allow me to have a similar setup that I have at the moment.

1. An Ethernet cable from the ONT, which will need to be run to the upstairs back room. Approximately 30-40 metres. The hub located upstairs near my computer

2. Power line adapters - TP-Link PA9020P, one installed upstairs, connected to the via Ethernet cable to my computer. The other one connected to my PS5 and Xbox Series X via Ethernet cable, which are downstairs. The hub located downstairs near to the ONT

3. Connect an Asus ET12 Pro to the new Sky Max Hub via Ethernet cable and turn the Sky Max Hub WiFi off. The hub will be located downstairs. I will still need to use a power line adapter upstairs.

4. Replacing the Sky Max Hub with a compatible third-party router, I have looked at the Asus XT8 or XT9. Is the Asus ET12 Pro compatible with Sky FTTP?

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated, please.

Thank you.

@skyuser247

Yes, I can confirm that would all work including the ET12 Pro which I have myself and supports DHCP Option 61 and DHCPv6 PD and can be used in access point (AP) mode by connecting to the Sky router or directly to the ONT via ethernet.

The setting for the ET12 Pro for Sky directly connected to the ONT on the WAN interface are as follows:-

Re: Upgrading to full fibre from part fibre connection

Hi skyuser247

something to bare in mind is that assuming you are on Sky's fastest server at 900mbs, any router offering speeds above 1gb is something you won't be able to use until you either move away from sky broadband service and use something like ee's 1.6gb service or sky start increasing speeds above 900. You are limited by the input to your router. Routers with lan ports of 2.5 are wasted on this service.

other pointers are the cables you are using should be able to support at a minimum the input speed of the wan connection.

keep your network simple, sometimes less is more, if you want to Keep it as efficient and quick as possible. Use wired backhaul where ever possible. More wireless nodes / devices depending upon the configuration can half your WiFi speed.

Only use one router, don't bother with multiple as it may cause issues with online gaming in your household.

ignore the hype with WiFi 7. Most iot devices support legacy protocols. IMO until more iot devices support wifi7 it's really a waste of time and money at this juncture. Give it another year.

Asus xt8/xt9 or even a xd5 may work for you assuming someone can clarify support for option 60/61 on dhcp.

hopefully that helps
