Re: Third party router with FTTP

Thanks @cookiemonsteruk, your very rapid response is much appreciated.

I've enabled dual WAN in failover mode, and entered the basic WAN details (e.g. option 61).

The asus router only has a single tab for IPv6 (i.e. I can't seem to differentiate between IPv6 options for primary and secondary WANs) not sure if this matters? I'll give it a try when the family aren't online... as well as testing the failover condition.

However, a more pertinent question, I guess, is how will I know if I need to setup IPv6 and my Sky line requires it? Will it just be a case of the failover connection not working? Or is there a clue in the Sky Hub's configuration pages?

Are you superfast yet?

The credentials for broadband lite adsl2+ is

For ADSL2+

Username: install at o2broadband.co.uk (the at needs changing to @ and spaces removed)

Password: Leave blank
Connection Type: PPPoA
VPI: 0
VCI: 38

I would leave ipv6 dhcpv6 pd as the dhcp option 61 is still the main authentication method for vdsl2 . You won't know if your takes dhcp v6 pd

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Wow, super quick again, @cookiemonsteruk

I guess perhaps I'm jumping the gun a little, super fast will be enabled in a couple of days... I think I just like to plan ahead. From what you're saying it sounds like I should wait until it's enabled before testing, since the authentication method will change.

I have a feeling I have all the information I need thanks to this thread and your advice... plus a bit of experimentation thrown in.

I'll test it out once it's switched on... May take a few days. Thanks again for your support.

Just an afterthought. Theres no mention of what vdsl modem you will be using with superfast.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

@cookiemonsteruk As far as I know I'll be using the existing ER115 (a replacement of which was sent to me last week). Sky will be activating the higher speed on their end.

Thats a predicament.

The asus can only be set to either router or access point. I don't think you can select it to be a router for virgin and access point for sky . If you choose router for both then and the use the er115 then you'll get double nat on sky. If you use a 3rd party modem bridge then i don't know how dual wan will work as the asus has only one ethernet wan port and dual wan usually has 3 option 4g dongle , ewan and dsl. Obviously then this case the dsl cable will be taken up running from wall socket to modem. Could you post the asus dual wan screen showing the drop down list of priorities (wan, dsl, usb etc) to see if you can set a lan ethernet port as a wan port ?

Re: Third party router with FTTP

SuperFast, FTTP?

You can just connect the router to the ONT. There are threads about it on here. However you eliminate the Sky router but if you've had the phone package you need the Sky router to make VOiP calls.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Thanks...

I can set any of the LAN ports in the Asus as WAN ports... so my intention is to connect Virgin to the WAN port as primary, and Sky to LAN1 (set as secondary WAN, the failover).

Would a relatively simple solution to this be to put the Asus into the Sky's DMZ?

(FYI super fast activated today; ~70mbps down and ~20mbps up.)

@LootInTheBoot

Unless you wish to forward ports for gaming configuration, etc... then you don't need to put either broadband router into the DMZ. It would be better to forward individual ports for the required application servers to work.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Thanks @mae-3

The issue I'd have forwarding individual ports is that the Sky BB will be the backup ISP for the network. Hence it's not any limited specific purpose, but for all services.

I think the question I'm trying to find an answer to is: when connecting a (non-DSL) router to Sky through an existing ER115 broadband hub, is it better to connect the router to the Sky ER115 using the option 61 method or by placing the router into the ER115's DMZ? In my case I have an ASUS RT-AC86U, which will be connected to the ER115 using an Ethernet cable.

(I should add that I've not successfully managed to get a working connection using option 61 yet; that may yet work now that super fast has been activated.  Will need to wait until the weekend to test all of this. I have to admit I really don't understand how Sky's authentication works, it doesn't make much sense to me.)

(Perhaps my queries should go into a new thread since I think I'm perhaps going on a tangent?)

A new thread would be useful.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

I have FTTP 150 and I have managed to get a Netgear RAX 70 (AX6600) working, however some things to note on my setup:

Connection Type: (On Netgear routers): Set to Does Not Require a Login

Setting the connection type as this brought up an option for DHCP Options: Vendor Class ID String (Option 60) and Client Identifier String (Option 61). Here, I tried the generic option (abcdefgh@1234567890abcdef) and also using my router's MAC address (aa11bb22cc33@skydsl|22cc33) however this didn't work. I ended up using wireshark (Start up Wireshark, start scanning and then reboot your SKY router whilst connected to it) and when I searched for udp.port==67, I saw that the client ID string was my MAC address@skydsl, but the password was randomised - nothing related to my MAC address at all!

Enable IPv6 with connection type as "DHCP", no user class or domain name. Set IPv^ DNS to get automatically from the server and LAN setup to use the DHCP server.

On the IPv4 settings, I have an option to enable a VLAN ID, however after reading some posts where it should be set to 101, I did so and it wouldn't connect. I was only able to connect when I disabled that setting.

After all this, I was finally able to connect and get everything up and running. Hope this helps anyone trying to set up a new router after the black friday sales this week.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

@LootInTheBoot  In answer to your original question about fttp we have thgis post over here with did use a 3rd party router with fttp

https://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband/Third-party-router-with-FTTP/td-p/3541862/page/2

On your other point. When i have to log a call with sky i have to place my sky router back into line as they don't support when you have a 3rd party router. So, i pit my sky router in fist to the dsl line. Then ethernet from one of the sky router's lan ports to the wan port on my Draytek. Works for me when i need it. Sky box gets ethernet to the other lan port on the sky router. Rest of my network sits behind the draytek.

Re: Third party router with FTTP

Please could someone kindly tell me if the TP-Link AX5400 will work with Sky FTTP. Thanks in advance.
