I'm not sure but have been very slow when our son has been using Google classroom and you tube

Normally on the pc or laptop but I'm not sure how to check speeds on the device

@peter1982 Go to the service checker link below, click on the Broadband or the arrow pointing right and see what the last 30 days the sky system thinks off your connection....

It says I've had average 150mbs over the last 30 days doesn't say it's dropped out

Going by the stats a download of between 3-6Mbps still leave plenty of bandwidth  left out of 159Mbps .  Its the downloading of games on a console that would tend to eat into your own speed.   Back to the cable to the sons pc can you check what category ehernet it is ie cat 4, cat 5e etc printed on the cable close to the plug and double check the category of the black wan cable. Also the ethernet chip on the pc depending on its age could be set to 10/100 Mbps

 

Folllow the steps below to check what the ethernet is set to and if possible change it to gigabit full duplex

 

to check what speed your card is currently set to :-

Go to the icon of the taskbar
Locate the icon Internet
Press on network and internet settings
Click on Ethernet
Click change adapter options
Double click on Ethernet. There, you get the speed, it can be 100 mbps or 1Gbps. If it is the second, we do not have to do anything, but if it is the first we have to configure the card

Then If you have a windows pc you can change the card settings as below



In the window where the speed was indicated, you have to click on properties
Check that the option Microsoft network clients is marked, if not, do it
Click on set up
We go to Advanced Options
Search Speed ​​& Duplex
Change the value to 1.0 Gbps Full Duplex
Accept

Ok I have changed the settings also both cables are 5e  should I get new cables

New ethernet cables would an option before calling sky (lines are down at the minute)

Now thats showing a fraction over 1Mbps.  There my be a chance that for whatever reason the ethernet isn't switching from 10Mbps to 100Mbps let alone gigabit .  Coud you switch out both wan and lan ethernet to new cat 5e cables.

I can get new cables this afternoon would 5e cables be ok or should I be looking at 6e as they are similar prices

@peter1982 5e cables are good enough 6e gives you faster future proof, whatever you find, the 5's will be a little more flexible...

Just be sure that they have all 8 cores on the cables connected, that gives you the Gb/s rated speeds.
