Keeping landline number when transferring to SKY Broadband

I’m currently moving from Talk Talk to Sky Broadband and I’ve been told I can’t keep my existing landline telephone number - which is a problem for me. Does anyone know if there's a way around this? Thanks.

You need to push the bit about number portability because that is the Ofcom regulation that states that fact.

-------

Zen internet on FTTP (900Mbps down, 100Mbps up). SAT> IP (Apple 4K 2nd gen TV to LG C1 OLED UHD TV/Dolby Atmos Denon AVR, DacMagic Plus for Hi-Res audio), hosting own blog/forum (cluster), OPNsense & Zenarmor L4/L7 NGFW & DPI IDS/IPS, Asus ET12 Pro Tri-Band wifi, Linux, Gamer: Xbox Series X/i7 laptop, round-robin DNS over HTTPS, non-proprietary VoIP HD AMR-WB (G.722.2) and more... While providers often have different policies, you might try a few steps to retain your existing landline number when switching from TalkTalk to Sky Broadband:

  1. Contact Sky: Reach out to Sky’s customer service directly and explain your situation. They might have a process for transferring or "porting" your current number, especially if you're within the same geographical area.
  2. Double Check with TalkTalk: Confirm with TalkTalk if there are any constraints on their end that prevent number portability, and clarify any additional options they might provide.
  3. Number Portability Request: It may be worth formally requesting number portability with both providers, as by regulation in many regions, they are obligated to facilitate this unless specific technical or regional factors impede it.
  4. Regulatory Guidelines: Look into local regulations regarding number portability as these sometimes can provide additional leverage if your current provider is noncompliant.
  5. Use Third-Party Services: Some third-party services offer number portability solutions by porting your number to a VoIP service and then connecting it to your new provider.

Contact both service providers as soon as possible to explore these options, as the process can require some time and coordination.

Thanks Mae-3. This is very helpful. I've tried talking to both Sky & Talk Talk with no luck. I'll have another go before mving onto your other suggestions.

@mae-3

Thanks. I'll definitely refer to 'porting' my existing number and see what happens.

According to Ofcom's regulations, consumers in the UK generally have the right under "Number Portability" (General Condition B3) and "Switching" (General Condition C7) rules, which allow them to transfer their landline numbers when changing providers. If you request it, the process should generally be free of charge according to the regulations, and your new provider can help arrange the switch.

And you can reach out to Ofcom for further guidance or resolution options if Sky & TalkTalk don't comply.
