Replacing Sky Q Modem Router Suggestions??

Hi All

i wonder if anyone can assist we have recently jumped over to sky broadband from bt after getting a great deal. The speeds are fine when working over Ethernet but as many others seem to be having issues with terrible speeds over wi-fi and repeated drop outs.  We never had issues like this with bt complete Wi-fi but sky broadband is driving me round the twist.

We have had engineers over and looked at the mesh network with sky q and we did have connectivity issues so they put in a booster and it's semi sorted the tv issue but the wi-fi is a nightmare the constant moans from the kids is driving me insane. I've read that you can replace the sky q hub with an aftermarket modem router but I'm after recommendations on what's the best and most importantly easiest to set-up.

if you kind folk could enlighten me that would make a very frustrated sky customer happy and keep the kids off my back 🙂

I have superfast over FTTC and had no issues since replacing my Sky Q hub with a TP-Link modem/router (VR2100) and make use of their OneMesh system.

Re: Replacing Sky Q Modem Router Suggestions??

@Skull+Treatythanks for your reply mate i really appreciate it. I have an engineer booked for the 3rd Feb but your recomendation is good enough for me if it cant be solved (which i suspect it wont) i need something that can handle alot of traffic as our house is wi-fi mad and the TP links seem to be good.

The mesh system you mentioned is that an add on or built into the router?

The OneMesh is TP-link's own mesh system and they have have a number of products available.

More than happy with it since swapping out the Q hub.

I don't think the Deco's are modems too, so you may well need a modem if you're wanting to use Deco's. The Sky Q hub doesnt have a bridge mode, so using the Deco behind the Q hub and turning off the Wifi may work but you will have double NAT which can impact gaming and work VPN's

Re: Replacing Sky Q Modem Router Suggestions??

@Skull+Treatymy plan was to buy the modem/router you suggest and to bypass (remove) the sky q hub as thats where i think the wifi issue is and then connect the mesh system to it for whole home coverage. I was previously on BT whole home and the sky speeds are better if wired in but lacks the wifi coverage of the whole home system (were in a bungalow over a large square footage) Overall im happy with the sky speeds but its just the wifi issue which seems to be a common theme looking at the forums.

I'm on superfast (FTTC) and the TP-link option worked without issue. Just connected the modem into laptop (via ethernet) and set-up from there, took about 5 minutes. Best to do so via the web browser rather than the phone app, some of the set-up items dont show in the app.

This link shows a guide for someone swapping out their hub for a TP-Link. he's later added the Deco M5 so might be the same set-up as you.

Re: Replacing Sky Q Modem Router Suggestions??

@Skull+Treaty hi buddy so after several more days of constant Wi-fi drop outs and the kids driving me insane I brought a tp link modem router and the speed difference was unreal but I also brought the tp link deco mesh system for whole home Wi-fi coverage and now I've got 32mbps constant Wi-fi all round the house plus the sky q hasn't dropped connection at all! I put the sky system back in to try it again and guess what 2mbps constant Wi-fi drop outs and kids calling me all the names under the sun. Now to try and get out of the broadband boost contract as it's not worth a thing!

Re: Replacing Sky Q Modem Router Suggestions??

Hi, I have issues all

over the house with connectivity, looking at the tp link vr2100, is it simply a case of plug and play and replace the sky hub?
