Repeatedly losing Internet connection

For a couple of weeks now I lose my internet connection many times a day all the devices (laptop, phone, tablet) on my wifi.  This break in connection is usually very brief - 20-30 seconds sometimes a minute but it happens maybe 20 to 30 times a day.  Very irritating.  I've run the diagnostics and the report is that all is good.  Any thoughts?

Also you are so close to the cabinet you'd think it was in your lounge so something looks wrong with the speed. Nothing is dropping from the wan but something else is afoot speedwise

Re: Repeatedly losing Internet connection

Hi

Not sure what results you are looking for from Mysky app tests.  Download speed 39mb/s Guaranteed 36 speed history 39,39,39.

I am very close to cabinet - probably less than 20 metres from hub to cabinet.  Let me know if you want any other details.

Thanks

Rob

Re: Repeatedly losing Internet connection

What I didn't say is that these "breaks" occur at all times of day and evening.  I used to blame Amazon and Netflix for "stutters" when streaming but now I realise it's not them.

Ok, i was looking for those extra details simply due to the distance from cabinet suggests an 80Mbps speed is possible. So unless you have specifically requested a 40Mbps line i would expect higher speeds

Other than that , due to the length of time your router has been connected without an external drop i would suggest it is your devices losing wifi connection with the hub

Hi @Robdaly

Your stats dont indicate an issue at all, no drops in the line or the WiFi radios. Have you tried going through Sky's WiFi help here.

Re: Repeatedly losing Internet connection

Hi

I didn't specifically order any speed when I moved to sky broadband a few years ago although about three years ago I did get an email to say that due to improvements I would be seeing an increase in speed over the next few months.  Sure enough over a period of about four months the speed increased from  (using speedsmart app) around 25-35 to between 55 and 65.  I once got a result of 73.  That was as good as it got and the speeds fell away again quite quickly to where there are now.

Re wifi that was my first thought but when these breaks happen especially on the phone and tablet I can see that the connection to wifi is good.  So I've no idea.  It always did it very occasionally - now like I said before it's maybe 20 times a day.  Nothing has changed, settings have not been changed and no equipment has been moved.

@Robdaly

The signal of the WiFi has no affect on whether your connection can drop, its interference in the signal that causes issues so you wouldnt see any change in signal strength.

  • Have you got a new or now used more control system on heating / hot water controls or similar that may be interfering?

As @TechmanagerMal pointed certain domestic appliances such as microwaves, zigbee, baby monitors etc broadcast with the 2.4 ghz range and can interfere with the wifi other than that it would be external interference from other ssids. The devices dropping in your case would tend to be band steered to 2.4ghz

Re: Repeatedly losing Internet connection

Replying to you and @TechmanagerMal .  No new equipment, heating or anything else and nothing that has been used more in the last few weeks.  Any suggestions of things to try that may resolve issue?

Re: Repeatedly losing Internet connection

Mine does this all the time. Its not anything to do with wifi of interferance its the signal dropping. The middle light goes out then flashes orange then back to green and all is ok...for 10 mins
