Gigafast broadband questions

Im considering coming back to sky broadband on the gigafast package. I'm currently on a 900mbps package with another provider who I can't fault at all but it is expensive. So I'm looking at viable alternatives at the mo.

I've sent a message to sky but they referred me here as they couldn't answer my questions.

My questions are:

Does the router support QoS?

Can I change any settings for QoS?

What built in security features does it support?

Is the service ipv4 or ipv6?

Will the router cope with approx 40 devices connected to it via WiFi and Ethernet?

Is it dynamic or static ip?

I've been told I shouldn't use my existing router which I did use with Sky broadband for probably 6 months before I left sky about 18 months ago which is a TP Link AX11000 and would like to continue using it if I transferred to sky. Is this possible?

Anything else you think is relevant please let me know. Tia

No

See above

What built in security features does it support?

Basic firewall

Is the service ipv4 or ipv6?

Hub is IPv6 capable.  Like most services, Sky still mainly uses IPv4

Will the router cope with approx 40 devices connected to it via WiFi and Ethernet?

That kind of number starts getting marginal

Is it dynamic or static ip?

Dynamic on all Sky domestic broadband

Re: Gigafast broadband questions

Thank you for your super quick reply

I did originally have static ip with sky broadband on their 80mbps service until I left about 18 months ago and do with my current provider, it just makes life a lot easier for us having it static.

Based on the answers it looks like Sky isn't going to be an option for us, hopefully one day they'll allow us to use our own routers though I do understand their reluctance.

Re: Gigafast broadband questions

You can configure a third party router to work with Sky broadband providing the router supports DHCP option 61. Static IPs were part of Sky's Pro broadband packages which unfortunately are no longer available. However, the dynamic IPs issued are 'sticky' and won't usually change with a simple reboot of the router.

Re: Gigafast broadband questions

I can get it to work with option 61, I've done it before when I was last with sky, it was just pain in the backside recovering my username password from the sky modem to transfer to my set up, as I had a static ip it wasn't the standard username password.
Ideally we want a static ip as we connect to devices, htpc and game server etc away from home without having to use third party software etc. Normally we just type in IP address:port and enter log in details to sign in

@misstah

Recovering an individual password using Wireshark is no longer required: a generic one in s particular format works.

Sky don't offer a fixed IP address on any current domestic broadband product: they are available as an extra cost option on their business service.

You could just use a free dynamic DNS name and have it auto update on the 3rd party router of your choice.
