Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123   Right thanks - we were both typing at once haha!  I'll do what you suggest but I always connect the Asus Router's WAN Port to the Port 1 on the modem - the one which says WAN/LAN - I use a std LAN Port when connecting My PC to either of them.

OK I'll try again lol! and as Arnie used to say "I'll be back!"

Thats not the right one. You want to connect it to LAN1 which is the opposite side to the one labeled LAN4/WAN on the TP-Link modem. See my picture below

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

Right then @jamesn123 and @mae-3  Did all the above and voila!  I got a white light on the Asus Router hihi - now that's a first and all thanks to the both of you.

Ok this is the Asus Status screenshot: -

Asus Status 3_LI.jpg

Is 5 GHz-2 showing I'm good to go too?

The modem setting screens now seem to tally with those 7 shown by @jamesn123 .  I'll just show screenshot 5 again though: -

Network Internet 2.JPG

My query with this is although the WAN Interface Name is correct, the screen doesn't show the details of the VLAN ID.  And again if I try to "add" it as a connection, I get this error message: -

Network Internet 1.JPG

Can I assume all is good though now before moving over to the Asuss' setups?

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123regarding the Modem to Asus Router connection - is that critical as after all the port I'm plugging the cable into on the modem is a WAN/LAN port so it does both?   Whilst I will change it, it will be good to know going forwards

@rozel

The port you conect to is dependant on your WAN configuration on the modem, since yours is slightly different to mine then I'd leave it in whatever port is working for you

Right thanks @jamesn123  -  I'll experiment tomorrow with the cable position.

More importantly, is the modem correctly set up now before I move on?

If you have a white light on the Asus then the internet has been established and you are good to go on the Asus XT8 and its wireless mesh. It really doesn't matter which LAN port you are using. Any further help or questions you have with the Asus and the wireless mesh please don't hesitate to ask. Great, it is at last working... 😀

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123and @jamesn123

Thank you for all your help, support and for sticking with me, you have been wonderful!  I do have a few hopefully basic questions to get started with the Asus kit please: -

1.  My current devices have fixed ip addresses - all in the 192.168.0.xxx range.  Indeed I'd like to change the router back to what it was but guess that will be in the 192.168.1.xxx range still?  I'd like to retain all my devices ip addresses - will this not be possible?  Are they dependent on how the modem was set up?

2.  I'd also like to name the 2.4GHz band and the 5GHz band(s) with the same SSIDs as I have now.  Again is this possible?

3.  As you have guessed by now all this broadband tech stuff is over my head.  Regarding the router's settings - I have printed off what my Sky Hub's are - will these be roughly the same?  Or will it be better ploughing through the Asus pdf

4. Finally for now or tomorrow morning - what band should I set SkyQ on? I mean the Mini Boxes cos the Qbox will be ethernet or is this not applicable as they connect to the mini boxes - confused lol!

Thank you again for today - I could not have got this far without you 😊

If the static IPs were set on the devices themselves you could move it over by just changing the Asus routers address space to 192.168.0.xxx however it looks like the static IPs have been set in your Sky router so unfortunately you will have to start over and make all the static resverations from scratch on the Asus router.

Yes you can do that, just make sure the Sky hub is switched off when you do it. Note that some devices dont like it so you may have to reconnect the odd few.

The Asus router will have a lot more settings compared to the Sky hub and they may well be named differently. I wouldnt mess with too many things unless you know what your doing

The mini boxes will only connect 2.4ghz when using a 3rd party router so you have no choice.

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123and @jamesn123

Good morning gentlemen.  First thanks again for answering my 4 questions.  If I may, can I come back on 2 of them please and add some more?  Then I'll have a fettle around in the new Router.  I am planning to switch off and disconnect the Sky Router on Saturday or Sunday.  My wife works from home on Fridays so I cannot really mess around tomorrow much.  Ok here goes: -

Questions 1 & 3 above - these are really linked.  I don't fully understand to be honest.  Ideally I'd like my devices to all have their respective ip addresses as they are now and which are "reserved" by the Sky Router.  So yes, they are saved in the Sky Router (is this what you mean?) but am confused.  These are in the Range 192.168.0.xxx and not 192.168.1.xxx which seems how the TP-Link Modem likes things - does this matter?  Please see the current Sky Router's relevant settings below: -

Current Sky LAN TCP-IP Setup.JPG

Then should I set the Asus Router to these IPv6 same settings?

Then do I need to set IPv6 : -

Current Sky LAN TCP-IPv6 Setup.JPG

As you can see I login to my Sky Router by typing 192.168.0.1 which is also what I believe to be the "Gateway".  Many of my devices have this setting and I'd like to retain it if possible.

Yes I know I may be asking too much but I have saved down all my "Attached Devices" in a Table.  If I could copy and paste these into the Asus somehow then I'd be a very happy bunny.

As you can see am confused because at the moment the Sky SR203 is a combined Modem/Router whereas I will have a separate Modem and Router going forward and again am unsure if the ip settings etc in the Modem, affect those in the Router

Questions 2 & 4 are understood thanks

@rozel

By all means you can change the Asus routers IP address space to 192.168.0.xxx but you'll still have to manually re-add all your static entries because this information is stored on the Sky hub, not your devices and the data is not interchangeable between the Sky Hub & the Asus router.

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

Ok @jamesn123 that sounds great - I'll paste the details in one by one.  So by using my Sky Router's ip address space in the Asus, especially using the Gateway 192.168.0.1 will I need to make any adjustments to the Modem or are these totally independent of each other in this regard?

Also what about IPv6 ?
