Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123and @mae-3

Basically because I want to reserve Fixed IP addresses.  Seems obvious to me that "Automatic ip" is why my PC has has been allocated a different ip address to that which was allocated fixed-wise in my Sky's Router.  but now I've read this: -

"Why on earth would you try and change the WAN settings after you got it working? Especially when your WAN settings have absolutely no relation to your local addressing that goes out to PCs, mobiles etc.  I did say dont mess with settings that you are not familiar with.

Also not really sure why you would change the modems IP to 192.168.1.1 this is the IP for your Asus router and you've now just messed up the LAN completely.

The settings you are looking for to set static IPs for your devices are located under LAN not WAN."

The last underlined bit is something I was completely unaware of.

Ok so I'll go back to what I had before and try again - WAN....LAN.....hadn't a clue what these settings are - I had hoped at the outset that they would be straight forward by copying them from the Sky's setup screens - oh well!  But in my defence I will say I said this was my main worry.

I really want my Gateway to be 192.168.0.1 - hoping this is possible

The LAN gateway IP address is set in the LAN screen IP address, eg: see screenshot below:-

Almost the same route LAN then, eg: see screenshot below DHCP server and the manual reservations are at the bottom of the screen shown:-

Why do you want your gateway to be 192.168.0.1 so badly? Your just creating yourself so much more work and headache changing the default setup

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123 because a lot of my devices show this and am trying to save work having to log into them to change.

Like I said, I knew setting up the Router would be difficult.  Not sure why this thread has been marked as "Solved" it is far from.  I still have absolutely no idea how to set up my ip Reserve List as before and still have absolutely no idea what the relationship the Modem has with the Router as far as setting the Range of ip settings.  You are both now asking me questions, which I have no idea how to answer. My devices have always had a Gateway of 192.168.0.1 - I have over 40 of them

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@mae-3  thanks.  So it's about the DHCP tab? This still doesn't show me how to insert the ip addresses and is it just the case of inserting the default gateway in that screen as the one I require?

@rozel

You dont have to change every device. Thats literally the point of DHCP.

- How do you think all your devices got their IPs, DNS servers & Default gateway in the first place before you went and made them static? DHCP did that for you

- Why do all your devices need static IPs anyway what is the functional use for that?

- You are making life so difficult for yourself by insisting that you use the 192.168.0.xxx space instead of the Asus's default 192.168.1.xxx space. Again what is your technical use/requirement for it?

The thread can only be marked as solved by yourself so you must have hit the button at some point.

The modem doesnt have any relationship with your local IP addressing other than being able to access its WebGUI which you dont need to do now you've setup the bridge. We configured all that yesterday with the help of my screenshots yet today you have now gone and changed a load of settings willy nilly and now we all on this thread have to try and understand what you've done and undo all the problems. Again this is why I said you should not go and change things that you dont fully know about.

I suggest you do some reading on the Asus user guide about how to navigate the UI as well as read up on how LAN DHCP & static IP addressing works.

Select LAN at the left side then DHCP server as shown in the previous screenshot posted and look down the screen to the following bit:-

Screenshot 2021-12-02 at 17.47.29.png

Select the client name from the drop-down list under MAC address, enter the IP address you'd like to reserve an IP address for that device press the + symbol. Press Apply at the bottom of the screen. Do that for every device you want a fixed LAN IP address for to the reservation pool.

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123  that way of replying is not helping me at all.  I told you I'm inexperienced with these matters.  I log into my devices all the time - just like with the Modem and Router on here if I don't know their ip address, how can I do this? Non-fixed ip's change all the time.

So I'll ask again: -

1. How do I change my Gateway to 192.168.0.1 for all my devices

2. How do I set the fixed ip addresses for my devices - I want them the same as I have now and are in the same range as the Gateway.

The so called user manual is about 9 pages long and is useless

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@mae-3  nice one! It isn't obvious because the drop down list hasn't appeared so far for me.

Now what about the Gateway?

Then I'll revert the Modem's ip to 192.168.1. 2 and amend the Router's WAN settings to start over

Thanks

@rozel

I know your inexperienced with this particular area, I've not got a problem with that, the frustration is when someone says they're inexperienced but then goes and changes things they haven't fully understood or asked about. The issue is its twice as difficult to figure something out if someone is changing things, running into issues and then asking why. It's much better to ask/research first then change.

Just like you got frustrated the other day with people throwing info at you that you didn't understand its frustrating for people who do understand but then have their job made twice as difficult by someone changing things they don't understand and then often not even mentioning that they changed certain things. I am thankful that you at least aren't doing the last part and are documenting everything you change with screenshots

No setting in the WAN interface of the Asus need to change, even if you change the IP address allocated to the TP-Link modem in bridge mode, eg: really the TP-Link in bridge mode should be left alone and so should the WAN interface on Asus they are set up correctly and working.

Of course, it is completely up to you whether you wish to try things out but please document your current settings to ensure you can get back to a working system if things don't work as expected by screenshot.

The dropdown list is on the client name (MAC address) as shown below with the tab dropdown in red arrow down shown below should be pressed to reveal the list, but please note if no clients are attacked to the Asus it will be blank:--

Re: New 3rd Party Router - To Improve WiFi

@jamesn123  Nicely put and I 100% agree with you - I really didn't think I went off on a detour, I genuinely thought I needed to change from Automatic to Static in the Router's WAN settings.  But as @mae-3 has said as well, I do inform you precisely what I've done and I'm taking plenty of screen shots, named appropriately so I can post them on here to better inform you so you can bail me out 😀

I understand what I need to do before starting off this morning and will revert the Modem's Ip back to 192.168.1.2 even though 192.168.1.1, which I changed to still worked with the WAN settings.  But IIRC you said this was part of the reason I had a conflict, so I'll revert as said to play safe.

OK thanks for the info on how to reserve fixed ip addresses and yes because I've not reserved any so far, hence the lack of a drop-down arrow and hence my confusion.

So all that remains is the Gateway address - currently with the Sky Hub it is 192.168.0.1 and many of my devices need this setting to get online - my several media players for example.  So in my mind, setting this to the same in the Asus Router will avoid work getting these devices online, once I change over and switch off the Sky Hub.

So assuming things are what they were this morning before I changed anything, what settings do I need to change to achieve this Gateway address in the Asus.

Can I take it that the "mac" addresses are fixed to the device, irrespective on its ip address?  Just asking

Thanks again - if I can have the info regarding the Gateway address, I'll see what I can do tomorrow, but I think the Sky Hub will have to remain on most of the day for my wife unless I can switch off for small periods - I'll see

I've explained how to change the gateway address already with a screenshot. Select the left LAN option, then the tab at the top LAN IP, and then type into the field the 'IP address' third field down of 192.168.0.1 which you'll see on the screenshot provided in a previous post by me above. This will change the gateway LAN address to 192.168.0.1 which I believe is what you want and require.
