Re: Issues after latest Software update

If its all the same to you @notagain my 30+ years in IT always end up showing that when firmware/software updates are performed, its the Soft part of the environment that is at fault 99% of the time, not the Hardware. 😉

@notagain

Looks like they have pulled v170 on some other boxes according to other threads. People with these boxes are stating their software has rolled back to earlier versions.

Re: Issues after latest Software update

Hoping some of you helpful folks can help me!

Our sky q box stopped working yesterday evening, initially thought it was the remote batteries so changed them but while it was playing a recording, I couldn't stop it, or return to menu screen, nothing.

After trying some of the resets, I eventually tried the 2 step software update.  This worked for about 10 minutes and then the same issue occurred, programme playing but unable to change channel, go to home screen, etc.

This morning the box won't turn on & the mini isn't finding the connection.

Is there any way I can avoid replacing the main box?

TIA

@suze69Just in case it is the remote try one from one of your mini boxes, you don't need to set it up as it will controll the basic functions (not voice or TV volume) if it works you at least know you don't have to replace your box.

Re: Issues after latest Software update

@Voyager... have they now!! that's interesting, oddly my box has been fine since my supposed 'WiFi' issue this morning. I've been and checked mine and it's still on 170 😞

@Voyager... Mmmmhhmm, very interesting indeed, one to watch to see whether the code reversion becomes a general thing or only for those that have raised a call. Mine is still running Q170, even after I've forced an update.

mine reverted to Q16 this morning and I'd had no issues so from the other posts it's mainly V1 boxes being changed back at this stage.

Re: Issues after latest Software update

@Daniel0210 thanks for that, mine was one of their promotional offers when Sky Q replaced Sk+HD in 2016, and I'm thinking about calling them to swap for a UHD capable version, but as I've mentioned before, i have a lot of programmes stored in the planner that I don't want to lose, so a replacement will only be my route if the box fries itself.

If only Sky had to ability to mark your recordings so that you can pull them down from the cloud should you need to, as they do if you purchase something from the Store. The other thing is all of the program history, I'm assuming that none of it is known to new Hardware, so new seasons of programs wont automatically record as they do at the moment.

@grog+arson His box was a V2 and now he's got a 2TB V3 box.

Re: Issues after latest Software update

Quick update all, so 24 hours on from my 'WiFi Change' the thing seems to be playing ball!

I know as soon as I've said that the darn thing will break again but just keeping you up to date.

Mine has been driving me nuts, freezing, noisy and now the hard drive keeps making a start up noise when the box is in standby!

Re: Issues after latest Software update

After my main box replacement yesterday the system has worked faultlessly with the exception of a wifi mini which once again couldn't find the main box this morning which is a semi-normal thing anyway. So I gave in and finally wired this mini like my other 2. Let's see if that resolves things once and for all.

How did you get it changed?

Re: Issues after latest Software update

Spent 90 mins on the phone to support doing various resets. They said if that doesn't fix it they'd send a new box out.

Re: Issues after latest Software update

I had a similar issue for years and have finally solved it.

For a year or two I had multiple crashes every day (box froze, fan ran at maximum and needed unplugging at mains to reset). It got so bad I used a smart plug to connect the box to the mains and set up a Siri shortcut on my HomePod to toggle the power on and off as I had to do it so often.

Sky came out multiple times. They changed the cabling as they claimed original installer should have used the thicker gauge stuff (long run, approx 30m to dish). They changed the box. No difference.

Finally, after a few months thought I'd try hardwiring the boxes to the network. Not feasible with Ethernet cabling due to distance. Instead bought some powerline adapters and used them. Importantly I then went into the engineers menu and completely disabled the WiFi on the boxes. This has now completely solved the issue!

Gone from multiple crashes every day for over a year to no crashes at all for a month or so.

There are so many users reporting this identical issue - Sky badly need to fix the WiFi implementation in their boxes. It's clearly not a problem at the user end. For what it's worth I'm not with Sky for broadband - unsure if Sky broadband users have the same issue as I did.
