I wonder if anyone else is having a problem with the F1 HDR picture being too bright?  I've particularly noticed it this evening. To explain:

  1. For SDR viewing, I have the TV's Luminance set to 22 to give a nice 100 nits image suitable for evening viewing.
  2. For HLG viewing, the default is Luminance of 100, as it is on all TVs.  But that gives a VERY bright overall picture. So I have to adjust it down to 50 to match SDR's reference white levels. The trouble is that I then lose the impact of the specular highlights, bright lights, etc.

Any thoughts on what the right approach is to HLG picture settings to deliver 100 nits reference white whilst still retaining the HDR specular highlights?

My HZ didn't look too bright in Bahrain. Didn't see tonight's though. Will take a look tomorrow.

I have luminance on 100. Not calibrated but the curve is designed to make ref white fairly normal and unremarkable at that setting isn't it?

What's your ambient lighting like?

Just a warning to F1 fans. The UHD recording cuts out after Q2, so if you're recording make sure you're recording on HD as well. Same as last year, any overrunning session is likely to result in a cutoff UHD recording.

So the over-brightness was most noticable on the F1 show, with them sitting on the white sofas, and I suspect it was overlit and poorly graded.

Anyway, I did a quick, basic calibration this morning using HCFR and my x-rite i1 colorimeter.  To get a reference white of 100 cd/m² for night-time viewing, I've had to reduce HLG luminance to 79.  For day-time viewing, where I prefer a reference white of 150 cd/m², I've set HLG luminance to 97. All measured at 75% of the HLG EOTF as per the HLG standard.

The down-side to this is that maximum HLG luminance is reduced to 645 cd/m² for daytime viewing, and only 442 cd/m² for night-time viewing. The maximum the TV can deliver on HLG is 746 cd/m² with luminance set to 100.

Sorry if this is very technical, but just wanted to share my findings.

Mine has recorded in UHD past Q2 and is still recording now.

Mind you I also recorded the HD coverage just in case..

@tarbat like the others my UHD recording is 3h 43

I don't know if this made the difference but I was watching the UHD feed live (so don't actually need the recording) - of course if the others weren't watching that would rule out that reason for the difference

Re: F1 uhd hdr

I'd set mine to record but was watching it live at the same time.
