Likely a cost thing. They could have easily kept one or both of the Eurosport channels and just rebranded them TNT Sports 5 and 6. Closing the Eurosport channels will save WBD considerable money as they will be broadcasting 2 less channels.

Also everyone should bear in mind the somewhat shaky finanical position of WBD - they emerged from the M&A reshaping of the media landscape (of the 2010s) with by far teh highest leverage (debtload) of any of the US media giants, and also with the weakest streaming product pretty much.
They are under alot of stock market pressure to (a) pay down chunks of debt, and (b) get their streaming numbers up , so no surpirse that they will be leaning into building up Max (Disco+). If WBD make little progress in the next 1-2 years, the stock market / invetsors will force a sale / breakup, in which ase who know where their sports right end up. So cost focus will be paramount for WBD, as you suggest.

If I were to subscribe to discovery plus/tnt sports does anyone know if it has VOD\ catch-up of the cycling, which is the case now with the original discovery plus sports package. Or is it just live content?

Us original BT Sport subscribers shouldn't get our favourite sports shunted off the linear 4 TNT Sport channels to make way for the Eurosport ones.
I'm all for putting the stuff Eurosport covered onto the red button and Discovery +.

@FastEddie1 what makes you think that will be the case
and let's face it most of the live sports TNT currently shows is either evenings or weekends with the exception of cricket
the Eurosport live content is all mostly in daytime and can easily fill the channels during week days and move to red button/app at nights/weekends when appropriate

So fine, put the ES stuff on TNT linear channels on weekdays and stick it on the red button at the busy times like weekends.
(But I bet they wont and the events with higher viewing figures will come on and niche sports pushed onto the RB)

This is all very well but on my L.G. T.V. Discovery + barly loads. So in a year*s time SKY Q might be an option or MAX if it is on Amazon Prime Video.

If the TV app is garbage just get a firestick or similar dongle
to be honest the D+ app on sky q runs like treacle too.
Big nostalgia twang for the low cost down to earth Eurosport of olden tymes. I look foward to the doubtless considerable UHD investments this will bring to cycling coverage.

Yes. I have to agree. I am so old I remember the days of Screensport. Good old fashioned Satellite broadcasting. Question if I may if the Discovery app is slow on SKY Q would SKY help or is a firestick the only option? Thanks.

worth trying the firestick. Can always send it back
and at least all your Internet ads for the foreseeable future will be based on what you watch on it 😁

Interesting @theredhouse55555 they didn't play nicely either
You mean the same Screensport that filed a complaint against Eurosport for them to be closed down May 1991 then two years later Screensport merged with Eurosport.

The very same. In the early days Screensport were not so agressive in a legal sense.
