@Katherinebrown  Any standard phone that plugs into the old phoneline work with Sky's VOIP as the phone simply plugs into the back of the hub, the hub does all the conversion for the standard phone to work..

Note that BT 'Digital Voice' handsets supplied alongside BT Broadband will not work with any other ISP.

If you have Sky internet calls, also known as Sky VOIP, you'll have a broadband Hub which has a standard phone socket at the rear.

Re: What type of landline phone do I need to buy to go with sky talk

There are 3 sockets in the hub. Two are labelled with a phone sign and one unlabelled purple one. The left and right look like the old RJ45 standard socket but the middle one is narrower and is labelled "UK". If I buy a regular landline handset and answering machine, will it come with the narrower plug.? Any info gratefully received. Regards.

The middle socket you refer to is a standard UK phone socket. A UK landline phone handset will come with a standard phone plug to fit the middle socket.

This is SCANDALOUS that BT sell cordless phones that will not connect to a non BT router!!! I had a BT telephone and broadband service installed in our new apartment two years ago but concluded that broadband connection was inconsistent so moved to Sky broadband last week - all fine except I've lost the use of landline, which is only needed for incoming calls. So I now need to buy another phone. BT are devious and dishonest by making such restrictive phones!!

@DavidLittle

If you think it's that scandalous perhaps you should vent your frustration towards BT?

To be fair, I believe BT also sell phones that aren't designed specifically for their Digital Voice service. They do work with Sky's Hub.

BT is a private company in competition with Sky, and entirely at liberty to do such a thing if they choose to: given they are the only ISP which has also spent a century making phone hardware, it would perhaps be more surprising if they didn't leverage that advantage by developing a bespoke system to offer to their own broadband customers.

If BT doesn't adequately inform subscribers that they will lose use of such equipment if they switch ISP, that's also up to them.

Yep, OK for BT to do this IF they warn you that their landline phone will only work with their router.

Having spent time researching I conclude that I have two "good" BT phones that don't work now I'm on Sky so will have to scrap them (more electrical waste!) and buy a new compatible phone - GRRRR!

There appears to be something of a second-hand market on eBay.

Thanks for all your responses. We've decided to do without a landline, though using the one provided in Sky's package for incoming calls would have had no cost.
