Landline comprimised by Scam call
Recieved a call on our Sky landline today 03/08/2022 from a number 01452498955, they are stating that they are calling from Sky and that due to works taking place on the Internet service there has been a breach where people from California are able to log into our router, she wanted me to type into my phone within Google the following see my 1P address viewer. I naturally did this to see where this was leading, she asked a couple of question to which I obviously stumbled on, I was then instructed to go to (Dependant on Phone) iPhone or android, I have a Android and she wanted me to go to play store and type in quicksupport- again I gave her the run around to which I was faced with profanities and awful language, I gave as good as I got, my concern is how do they have my Landline number has Sky's data been breached? Therefore I would like a call back from Skybto explain how they have my Landline number - for one we never give out our Landline number 2, we never use our Landline for anything apart from calling Family in Canada 🇨🇦 so would like some answer as how this is possible, we are used to Scam calls on our Mobiles but this is a first. FYI if they call back they will be getting the same run around as they got today. Sky please contact me as this is not right we pay for our landline to be protected, I also fear that elderly people or non tech people will fall into their trap.

Re: Landline comprimised by Scam call
@MarkDDS it's highly unlikely there has been any data breach from Sky. It's a well reported attempt to scam you. Typically scammers use automatic diallers to call every conceivable number in a sequence to see if one answers. They don't know who owns the number that answers.

Re: Landline comprimised by Scam call
They use autodialers that try hundreds, if not thousands of numbers per day. There is no breaches they just get lucky with people answering.
I could sit here today and try calling hundreds of random mobile numbers and I am sure I'd get lucky with a few answering.

No: if that were the case the criminals would be using personal information to make their calls more credible.
A dataset of numbers in use by subscribers to any particular telco isn't by itself PID within the definition of UK data protection if there's no other information attached to each entry : lists of numbers in use are routinely circulated within the international telecoms market to facilitate billing and routing. As indicated above, shadow call centres typically use autodialers populated with such a data file: they can claim to be calling 'from Sky' but have no idea who you are unless you tell them.
