Sky HD box problem

Hi, my Dad has an ancient Sky HD box. It's started playing up and giving intermittent 'no signal' error messages. I'm in a different city so I got my nephew to go through troubleshooting (Sky insisted I do this before I booked an engineer).

 

He said "Other channels were doing it too, it's a very intermittent issue so I didn't see it yesterday but when I arrived today it was saying no signal on a channel that wasn't stv. I had it on BBC 1 everything was fine and as soon as I tried to retune the channels it said there was no signal and lost the channel but as soon as I came off it worked again."

 
So, I'm wondering, maybe I should j pick up a used HD box and swap over. Does this require a call to Sky? Or should I ask to update to Q? Do they charge?
