Basic Freesat help please

I have just moved into a property that is 6 years old. No tv ariel but I do have a dish. There are two cables (coaxial type) coming into the property I would like to connect a Freesat type box to these.

My question is, some boxes look like only one coaxial input! How would this work? Also any advice on a very cheap starter Freesat box?

Thanks in advance Kevin

hi @kev1nh

The problem we have is that there are two different types of LNBs (the electronic bit on the dish) & I don;'t know of an easy way for you to tell which you have unless you can easily access the dish to see any markings.

The 2 types are :

1) Legacy 'Universal' LNBs that supply approx 1/4 of the channels at any time depending on the voltage & presence of a 22Khz tone  sent by the box to select the band & polorisation. These can work with just a single cable providing you only want to watch a single channel - 2 are often used to allow recording of a different channel

(These are used by SKY +/HD boxes, TV Satellite tuners & older Freesat boxes)

2) Wideband LNBs as used by SKY Q - these need 2 cables as they supply a constant wideband (i.e. both high & low bands together without the need to switch) & need a separate cable for each polorisation.

Although possibly not the cheapest solution the best option may be to get a new 4K Freesat box as these can work with either type of LNB

BTW either way without having the dish checked out by an installer you do have a risk that it is mis-aligned

P.S. Does your TV have a Satellite tuner ?

Re: Basic Freesat help please

Freesat 4K boxes will work with either type of lnb😉

Cheapest box without recording capability £145 or with recording capability £180🤔
