Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

These pucks are really flaky - both hardware and software.

I have reported elsewhere about my buffering issues that occur only on the Sky Stream Puck, but again tonight, and as I have not rebooted one of the pucks for a couple of weeks now, watching Sky News is a joke because the picture is randomly pixelating. When this has happened on the many previous occasions, a reboot always resolves the problem..

It would not be so bad if I were not paying them £60 per month for an inferior product.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

I have experienced two significant issues with these Pucks

1.  My first Puck - picture freezing and black screens.  To resolve this, I had to reset the puck not watchable at all.  To be fair if you call sky they do answer relatively quickly, but I had several calls trying various resets and software updates etc, before they agreed to send me a new puck.  This is where the fun started.  This puck never got to me and somehow got stuck in the system, so they couldn't then send me another replacement.  The solution that was then proposed and accepted was that I sign-up to the whole home, they send me an additional puck, I was compensated for the additional cost, we swapped the pucks and that puck worked for a while.  This was mainly with Apple+ but happened on all channels.

2.  Flacky Picture - Now with the new puck I get the picture breaking up, the box has frozen but the picture becomes unwatchable with the amount of break-up.  I am pretty certain that this is after watching Disney+.  If I restart and watch Tv it's fine, then after watching Disney for a short time I get the picture break-up.  This happens on all channels.   It might happen after other apps but rewatching "A.G.E.N.T.S of sheild" and the wife "Raising Hope".  I have just called an gone through all the resets again with the call agent but again straight after Disney+ the issus aprears again.

To be honest, getting a little frustrated now as I have spend many hours on the phone to sky+ not great when you are paying for a premium service.  Anyway let's see what happens on the call back tomorrow.  I have just moved from VM (Expensive but never had an issue with BB or TV.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

Thankfully for me the picture issues on my pucks seems to have been resolved now. I still do need to reboot them once every few weeks as they still seem to get software glitches every now and then. But in general now works much better than when I first got them

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

I moved from VM, too.

Mainly price influenced my decision, but actually picture quality was not brilliant - I am sure VM were throttling bandwidth..

I am having fewer problems now as I have moved from VM to Plusnet where the network latency is down from 15+ms to around 5ms...

I think that Sky builds everything at a price that compromises performance with no option to get better performance. This is clearly true with Sky Glass and was with Sky Q.

The problem is there are very few alternatives...

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

Just to add I am with VM broadband and as my previous comments I no longer seem to have the pixelating and frezzing issue. Never thought it was a broadband issue as I have 1GB connection and everything else in my house that streams TV shows worked fine when I was having the issue with Sky pucks

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

Same here, I no longer seem to be getting the pixelating issue requiring a reboot. I still get the odd software glitch or the picture suddenly gets very dark requiring a reboot but not the pixelating thankfully.

If your watching on any app, always exit the app (press back, back etc) rather than pressing the home button. Without closing the app it remains open in the background which can cause issues.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

Ok thanks I'll try this, but really this should just work without workarounds, especially trying to get the while family up do that! 😁.  At the moment the box seems not fit for purpose.  I am going to try another replacement and see what happens.  I'm expecting that it doesn't resolve the issue but open to give it a try.  Generally the functionality of the box is great..... When it works.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

I totally agree. It is very clear that the puck struggles with UHD content...

No issues here. Most likely an issue with the quality or speed of your broadband connection.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

IF that were true, the same problems would be encountered on the Roku and the 2 LG TV`s, but it is not.

I was with VM 500mbps, now with Plusnet on 900mbps.

Broadband is rock solid - constantly monitored by a UniFi Dream Router 7.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

I agree with GeoffM5 - All other streaming devices worked fine when I was having Puck issues. Smart TV, Apple TV, iPads all worked fine watching Sky Go, Netflix, Amazon etc....

The issue is still for some and was for me firmly with the Sky Puck!

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

Same with my hi sense TV it streams UHD flawlessly wirelessly.  I have my issue with the puck wired or ,wireless and HD it breaks up not even UHD.

Re: Sky Stream pic pixelating and freezing.

@GeoffM5 @Fromelad @flackypuck

The key difference between a Sky Stream puck and all your other streaming devices is the server-based infrastructure which SkyOS runs on.

Your smart TVs, Roku, Apple, FireTV, etc devices are all running operating systems which run predominantly from the device itself. They have on-board storage where apps are downloaded to and run from. They connect to app-specific servers in order to stream content.

SkyOS on a Sky Stream puck is different. It connects to a Sky/Comcast owned server and maintains that connection continuously, whilst your puck is turned on (and in standby if network standby is turned on). The server is where all the apps are stored and run from, as well as all your account information, playlists, etc are stored.

You have no choice over which server you are hosted on. This is determined when your Stream account activates. It appears that some servers are busier than others and potentially become congested at certain times (such as when many customers are streaming UHD Sport). This congestion could be why some customers experience a better service than others.

There's also the many variables surrounding every individual customer's broadband connection. Be it IP addresses, DNS servers, CGNAT, or whatever, Sky have no control over the intricate differences between such networks.

What seems to be apparent however, is that Sky's server-based infrastructure struggles with some of these intricate differences due to the different way it functions when compared to other streaming devices.

Like you, I found that all my other streaming devices performed better with my particular Gigabit fibre connection. The Stream puck was the only device I found to be regularly having unexplainable issues. No amount of troubleshooting gave me the same sort of reliability that I was getting from other hardware.

To be honest I didn't really suffer many bad issues, just annoying small ones such as 'please wait' every now and again, or a sluggish response to navigation, or random lip sync drift. All of these mounted up though and made me realise that I didn't really want to continue paying for something I didn't think was giving me value. I therefore ditched Sky Stream and switched to using the NOW app on other hardware for Sky content. It works perfectly.

In general, this is why I always recommend people to try Sky Stream for themselves on their own broadband network because it's the only way to discover if it will work for you. It's clear that it works well, even flawlessly some claim, for many customers, but for others it remains problematic. It's just a shame that there's no concrete solution to getting it to work better without trying a multitude of alternative broadband suppliers.

All I can say is that I'm perfectly happy using NOW rather than Sky Stream. It's good that Sky still offer this as an alternative means of getting their content.
