Puck & DVD recorder
Simple question.
I'm about to consider a new Sky contract possibly upgrading from SKY+ to Stream.
Can I connect my DVD recorder to the puck ?
Alternatively, could I record the stream via my smart TV?
Many thanks.

You can't record from a stream puck, everything is streamed online via the internet.
The puck only has an HDMI port allowing you to connect it to a TV.

Re: Puck & DVD recorder
DVD recorders are essentially obsolete (which would be why no-one has manufactured such hardware for many years) : the HDMI standard was specifically created with embedded encryption to defeat them.
Recording to USB on a smart television is only possible for Freeview content received by the aerial and DTTV tuner built into the television set itself.

Does the fact that my DVD recorder has a hard drive make any difference?

No. You simply cannot make legal recordings of streamed copyrighted material over HDMI, be it onto a hard drive or optical disc.

Re: Puck & DVD recorder
Presumably you've been using the SCART connection out of the back of the Sky+ hardware to the recorder: that's a connection technology which is now almost half a century old. Modern devices just don't use it any more as it cannot carry high definition content and (from the point of view of the rights owners) can't be protected adequately from copying hardware.

Re: Puck & DVD recorder
Buy an HDMI-to-AV or HDMI-to-SCART converter with HDCP.

I'm not aware that any such hardware exits: a manufacturer would never be granted licences by the relevant bodies.
Adapters to SCART don't carry HDCP: it isn't relevant to the SCART connection and the quality loss is so great that rights owners tolerate such things (not that they could prevent them anyway)

Re: Puck & DVD recorder
To SAVVYSCLUTTER. Thanks for that suggestion. Since posting I've renewed my Skyplus contract. Wife prefers that porgramme guide & via a triac we can watch both sky & terrestrial in the kitchen as well as the lounge. If she sees a film she wants to keep we can record to disc or on the hard drive. Confirmed luddites!!
