Upgrade?

My father has been with Sky for many years and has the old Sky box and my sister has recently contacted Sky and the have offered an upgraded package to Sky Q.  (New Sky Q box to be delivered) She was told she he will get Sports, Movies and Netflix.

He doesn't have Internet at his house and won't have it installed for whatever reason, customer service are aware of this and say they will send an engineer out.

I'm not a Sky customer myself so I'm not sure how it all works but surely an Internet connection is required, certainly for Netflix?  Live sports also?

Any help would be greatly appreciated as we don't want to be paying for services that we won't receive.

Thank you

Hi @Peachlover An internet connection will be required to use SKYQ and download content from apps such as Netflix etc.

Live SKY Sports would be downloaded through the SKY dish attached to your property.

Re: Upgrade?

Thank you. So its just the 'streaming' services such as Netflix that he won't get?

Can you explain more about downloading via the dish please?

Thank you

Streaming services such as Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+, iPlayer, and ITVX will not function at all without a broadband connection.

The Q box will receive all channels via the satellite connection to watch live or record to the hard drive. It won't 'download' anything via the dish. A recording of a live broadcast can be played back at any time.

Sky Q is quite different to Sky+ in terms of the user interface. It can take some people a while to get used to the changes.

Whilst SKY Q technically can be used without the internet, in reality it is very restricted and I think would be very frustrating to use - it is not really designed to be used without an internet connection of some form

SKY Q can be used to watch Live TV including Cinema channels & Sports channels  which come from the Satellite. which can be recorded from to watch later  (just like SKY HD),  but see my notes I link to later regarding the UI & likelyhood of not being to revert back

However, much of SKy Q prompts for 'On demand' or 'Catch up'  which all require the internet  to download content to then watch.

As mentioned all the Apps such as Netflix require the Internet

Personally I think it would not be a wise move for your Father

You may also want to read some other notes I have put together for people considering switching - some points are probably not relevant for your father but others may be:

SKY HD to SKY Q

I would even doubt whether an engineer would install Sky Q without an internet connection.

You might want to consider whether only having 'live' Cinema  seriously impacts the value returned by the fairly high cost of that add-on.
