Transferring content from old Sky box prior ro installing Sky Q
I am about to switch from my old Sky box to Sky Q. I have a number of programmes (mainly BBC )with music content, which I don't want to lose. I have purchased a Cam Link device which will accept the HDMI output from the current box, with an output to plug directly into my PC. A hassle, I know, but I want then to record these programmes to my HD so I can watch them in perpetuity. I don't intend to breach Sky copyright, and will only download and record material from terrestrial channels. Can anyone recommend software to record and process this material in my PC?
Thanks

@DaRo1 Transfer of content from one box to another is not possible and is a breach of contract

Regardless of how you wish to achieve this @DaRo1
It is against Skys Terms and Conditions.
Certainly not something that can be discussed on a Sky run Forum

While you could argue that's a fair use exception, sadly copyright law might not agree (is keeping it for as long as you want really "time shifting"?) so I don't think you can be sure you're not breaking it.
Of course if you were to leave that stuff on your PC, I don't think the Beeb's crack team of investigators will track you down any time soon.

Support for that brand of device indicates, as expected, it cannot carry HDCP content.

Re: Transferring content from old Sky box prior ro installing Sky Q
Thanks for the replies. I wasn't aware that e.g. BBC content was protected by Sky copyright. In any event, I amd NOT trying to copy to Sky Q but to my PC. I accept a) this connot be discussed on a SKy website and b) that it might not be possible anyway.
One further query: presumably HDMI from a sky box to a tv cannot be encrypted unless the tv has decryption installed, correct? Bt is the output digital or analogue?

Yes, it's encrypted with HDCP. The TV decrypts it before displaying it.
You do not own the content and only have a very limited licence for its use.

HDMI output is digital. The box, television and any other equipment (soundbar, projector) exchange an HDCP handshake and have to either support the standard or pass it through unchanged.

Unencrypted in transmission (i.e. 'free to air')
This is not the same thing as the HDCP chain between Sky box and television set.
I think we're in danger of straying outside the remit of this forum...

All HDMI signals are digital. HDCP came in about 2006 I think? HDMI can carry traffic that's not encrypted with it, but a Sky box doesn't send any that isn't.
Basically you'll probably have to get the content elsewhere.

Re: Transferring content from old Sky box prior ro installing Sky Q
if the content is that important to you then request a composite lnb as you have free view.
You can then use the old SkyHD box as a free view box in addition to your new SkyQ box - I believe you will need to pay for a new card.

@Raider999 My understandning is that the playback (& recording) functionality ceases on the old SKY HD box once the account is switched to SKY Q so this would not help in this case

Re: Transferring content from old Sky box prior ro installing Sky Q
Freesat, not Freeview.
As @nigea99 indicates, use of the hard drive is a subscription function. It used to be possible to pay Sky for this where the household was going to the legacy 'Freesat-from-Sky' product, but that's not available in a move to Q
'Freesat-from-Sky' is now Sky TV Essentials on a Q box with app and hard-drive access.
