Sorry, also meant to add (why can't posts be edited here?!) that if the issue has been known about for about ten years, it's about ***** time it was sorted out!

@deepgreen Sky decided for some reason you need to be level 3 to be able to edit post also Murdoch has nothing to do with Sky now he sold the company to Comcast in 2018
I may be a Sky Superuser but I am still just a Sky customer
Sky Q 2 TB (Silver)Box, 2 Mini boxes since June 2016, all connected by wifi
Sky Broadband Hub/SR203, Sky Ultrafast broadband

Good grief, my use of that adjective was obviously applicable to the tech, not the story
and if you think Murdoch owns Sky, you really haven't been paying attention.

I decided 6 years ago it never would be (I think it's inherent in the 3rd party networking stack Sky use and they probably can't even fix it) and had to make the decision between leaving Sky or finding a workaround
"Again, as I said, every other wi-fi-dependent device we have works perfectly everywhere in the house, just not Sky."
This doesn't need restating. Do you imagine this is not also true for all the rest of us who've been through the same pain?

Yes, he sold it but was the owner when all this long-standing problem began - but a fair point about current ownership.

It really wasn't obvious.

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.
Well - I have never heard the term "flakey story" before
I have often heard the term "flakey tech"

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.
Sorry, but I felt It obviously did need restating because you focused on the need to provide increased wi-fi strength/stability, which I had already said is not the problem in my case. So - it seems that a huge organisation like Sky can't, or won't, fix this significant long-standing problem. It would be interesting to know what proportion of people with this issue are using third party routers as I am.
Thanks to all, by the way, for the contributions.

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.
I never said the first thing about that but maybe someone did, in which case I concede restating it is fair enough.
I said wifi just doesn't work reliably and the options are;
powerlines
ethernet
a Q booster (because it behaves like an old Sky router so participates in the proprietary mesh, not because it improves the wifi signal)
hard wiring into mesh nodes
as the only ways I personally believe this stuff works properly with third party or Sky Max routers.

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.
Thanks - I might try a Q booster , but it's yet more kit just to get something to work that should do so to start with. It's not as if wi-fi is a new concept but Sky still don't seem to have got to grips with it.

Im interested in the second bit....
So Ive tried this, seems if you cable up, and if you turn of Wifi on Q box, the mini cannot hold a connection to it.
Ive turned on the 5ghz only and straight away my mini box is alive, and it shows connected via my Wifi SSID in settings, however netflix shows a high connection speed so perhaps this is misleading information?
Turning back on the 2.4, makes little obvious difference, however netflix on main still reports a good speed (nearly double my unwired/wifi speed)

Interesting
And your mini was wired too? If so, had you disabled wifi on that as well before this?

No, mini is not wired.
Location is not really practical, and this is the reason we have it.
Anything else makes its existence pointless in our home.
If anyone else knows a way of checking speed that isnt netflix I'd be inteterested to hear.

Ah well yeah you can't disable wifi on the Q if the mini needs it.
A Q booster should be able to help bridge though (you have one I think so clearly not)
I use powerlines for that hop

Re: Sky Q box regulary loses internet connection.
I wasnt sure if it would use wifi on mini, talk to router and wired to main q to get the info it needed. Seems not at mo!
