I might be going back to thinking the box is not HDR compliant, even though thr hardware version suggests it it.

When I  go through the TV Amazon Prime app, a film that is labelled on the info as both UHD and HDR results in an "HDR on" screen indication flashing on. Looking at the infor for the same film via the Amazon Prime app of the Sky Q box has only the UHD label and not the HDR. Not surprisingly,  o HDR indication comes on when playing the movie.

if this is the case, find it puzzling why new Sky Q 2TB box which has the latest Hardware Version and is supposed to be HDR compliant isn't.

Just trying to get all my facts right before a call to Sky, if this is what's needed...

@Jeepyrover the Sky Q box you have is definately HDR compatible as I have the same box and can watch in HDR what might be the problem is your TV from what I can find out is your TV is from 2015 and in this post here  on AV forums there is a debate on the TV's actual ability for HDR bearing in mind that Sky use HLG version of HDR then unless the TV fully supports  HLG which is dubious due to the age of it you won't get it on Disney+

I may be a Sky Superuser but I am still just a Sky customer

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

@Jeepyrover

Your Q box is HDR compatible if the hardware version number starts with 32B1.

Looking at your TV model, it's nearly 10 years old and appears to have very basic rudimentary HDR and is quite possibly not HLG compatible. Sky Q needs to detect a HLG HDR compatible TV for full HDR compatibility.

I've read some forum posts and seen some YouTube videos which show some owners of your TV model getting HDR from the TV's built in Prime Video app but that's about it. It doesn't say what type of HDR it is either so it could be a fake HDR which the TV is creating by upping the brightness and contrast.

To be honest, with a TV of that age, you're never going to get any form of HDR looking particularly good, so to get 4K from Disney+ you'll need to get a newer model I'm afraid.

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

Many thanks @Laing1 and @Padam_Padam for looking into this for me! The hardware version definitely starts with 32B1 and it looks certain from what you say that the TV is too old to satisfy the HDR requirements. The only way I can definitively tests this is by getting myself a nice new TV, any recommendations? 😁

The only nagging doubt I have is the listing of the box in My Sky "Sky Q 2TB UHD Non-HDR" - a new TV will provide the answer! I will post an update when this happens 👍

Thanks again!

Thanks @Padam_Padam @it's an LG 55UF860V-ZA

Unfortunately your TV pre-dates HLG so no app on SkyQ will provide HDR.

The earliest LG sets to support HLG were the 2016 OLED and SUHD models, the lesser models for that year weren't upgraded.

I have a 2016 55UH850V which I bought just before LG had announced which models would be updated to support HLG. It was a bit of a nail-biter waiting for LG to make the announcement especially when they initially announced only 2017 and later models would be updated.

Many thanks @simon194 much appreciated - more reassurance that a new TV is on the cards! 😁

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

Sorry to chime in but just wanted to ask a related question.

I too have just had my SkyQ box replaced by an engineer as the original one started dropping signal and playing up. I was unaware at the time that the updated box would have this HLG HDR upgrade. Since getting it my TV intermitantly skips/cuts out the image, sometimes for a split second, sometimes for a couple of seconds (its ridiculously annoying). After the longer cut outs it comes back on with the HLD HDR logo popping up in the top right corner... I assume its a problem with my TV, rather than the box... My TV is also the LG 55UH850V from 2016. It does say this TV should be compatible with HLG HDR but my current experience seems to be to the contrary...

I guess my question is what do I do? Will Sky eventually update the software and fix the problem? Is there anyway to update the software for my TV to make it more stable? Or am I going to have to bit the bullet and save up for a new TV? This would be so annoying as other than this I have no issues with this TV at all!

hope someone can help!

Thanks

Sounds more likely the hdmi cable is the issue. Have you tried another? The logo coming up is normal for any re-sync to the incoming signal. Assume you meant HLG, not HLD?

Does this happen when you're watching SDR or even HD content?

If a better quality cable (doesn't need to be more than 10-15 quid) doesn't work, it's worth talking to LG.

Yes, I'd agree with @Chodley - it sounds like you need a new high speed HDMI cable. You don't need to spend much at all on one, even an Amazon Basics one costing £5-10 depending on length will work perfectly well. I used one with my Q box for years.

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

Thanks for your replies

Yes I too wondered about the cable, the sky man didn't seem to leave us with a new hdmi cable when he switched the box so I ordered a new HDMI 2.1 8k cable on Amazon hoping it would fix it and it hasn't really made any difference...

The annoying thing is the intermittent nature of it? I'm sat right now watching Sky F1 in UHD with no problems at all!?

last night watching the cricket in HD it was really bad. It does generally seem worse in UHD than HD though. The only way I seem to be able to improve it is to turn off the TV and the Sky box, turn them on again and it seems to improve (sometimes!) It's like there's some sort of cache on the TV that fills, reaches some critical level and then can't process the signal quick enough so flicks in and out of a HLG HDR image?

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

If you're sure that your box is HDR compatible ignore this, but I'm sure I read somewhere on here that if you have an older Sky Q box which is 4K UHD but non-HDR (like mine), if its replaced due ti being faulty they won't send a replacement in the post which is HDR.

if you want the HDR box it has to be installed by an engineer and its charged fir, despite being a simple plug & fit.

I have a 2 TB 4K UHD box (ABO......) which is non-HDR which is acting up and want to get it replaced with a HDR model, but you can't do this online and have to call them.

I don't think they have many non-HDR boxes left so not sure they can control that any more.

I had my HDR box posted to me when I upgraded from an original 2TB. No engineer.

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

Could be time for me to get a replacement then.

Just to clarify then, if you press the 'Home' button on the remote and scroll down to 'Help' (between 'Settings' and 'My Sky',  you can then scroll right onto the image titled 'Sky Q HDR'.

Click on that and you see a load of text/information, but at the far right you'll see a small box with 'HDR capable?' inside.

If you click on that it'll tell you if your box is HDR compatible or not.

If it is I'm ordering a new box. 😂

Me? Mine is definitely HDR. I specifically ordered an upgrade and apart from the difference being visible, the TV reports a HDR10 / DolbyVision / HLG input when detected. Not that the Q can do DolbyVision.

Re: Sky Q 2Tb box HDR compatible?

Well I just rang Sky to tell them I wanted my faulty 2TB Sky Q box replacing with a HDR compatible box and was told it'd cost £99.

However, they could send an engineer out to fix my existing box for free, which I'm sure will result in the engineer replacing the box.

It'll be interesting to see if the replacement is HDR compatible.
