I tried to turn on my Sky Q box yesterday afternoon but nothing was responsive. I rebooted and it all worked fine but when I went to watch a programme I had recorded earlier that day it had failed. The reason stated was due to a power cut but there was no power cut. (I know this as the cooker and microwave clocks always need re-setting after a power cut.) I checked around the box and there were no loose cables and nothing that would have caused a local power cut to the device. All power switches are well hidden behind the TV cabinet and not eaily accessable. What caused the Sky Q box to fail?

The red record light was not showing, just the amber standby light, so the recording was not happening when I powered off. Once rebooted the recording would not play at all. In the past when there has been a power cut part way through a recording, I have been able to play back up to when the power went. Am I therefore right in assuming for this to have happend the box would have had to powered inself off just as the recording was about to start? If so it is quite a coincidence.
Whatever caused your box to crash likely happened before 12. Therefore your box wasn't working for the duration of the planned recording.

Re: Power Cut! What Power Cut?
They do that sometimes. (The 'power cut' was your power cycle and the recording was marked as such)

Re: Power Cut! What Power Cut?
Please excuse my non-techy ignorance but what is a power cycle? Can this be prevented or is it something we have to live with?

Re: Power Cut! What Power Cut?
My recording was at Midday and I went to watch it around 2pm, which is when I found the box unresponsive.

A power cycle is simply turning the box off and on again. If a recording was 'active' then the recording will be marked as a 'power cut'. (And the power was cut...)
It should not be a frequent issue - but it does then you may wish to contact Sky to replace the box.

Re: Power Cut! What Power Cut?
@Alan1952 the box crashed/hung - it would be (reasonably) impossible to identify when the box crashed and what it did when power cycled.
As I said, see what it does in future - it should be rare.
