No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

Hello,

My Sky Q Box seems to have developed an issue, whereby it fails to output the required video signal once it has been placed on standby, then switched back on.

Quick bit of info on setup;

TV: Samsung QE65S95BATX. Firmware V1520.7

Sky Q 2Tb 32B108 Software VQ220.000.23.00L, connected to HDMI Port 1. Anynet+ (HDMI-CEC) enabled.

All power saving on TV and Sky box are disabled.

HDMI control is on.

I've all but ruled out the TV and the HDMI cable by trying Sky box on HDMI 2, an alternative cable, an alternative media box on HDMI 1 and by disabling Anynet+ on HDMI 1. That leaves the Sky Q box itself.
If I remove AC power to the external power supply, then reapply power, SKy box powers up and the TV detects the video output and displays the picture. It remains 100% stable until it (Sky Box) is switched off. The fault returns next time it is switched on. This problem used to happen very occasionally, but it has become much worse in recent weeks, and is now apparent ever time. As my AC socket is difficult to get to, I'm going to fit a smart socket, so that I can at least remove power from my smart home app rather than try and find the supply plug every time I need to reboot. It's not ideal, but a workaround I can live with until I figure out what has changed, if anything. I'm not one for changing configuration once it's working, so unless a setting had changed, I'm inclined to point to the box at fault.

Has anyone experienced this issue with a similar setup to mine?

Thanks in advance.

Drew

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

I have exactly the same problem.

I had an issue with my sky Q box, requiring rebooting quite often, so Sky replaced it.  Didn't have this problem at all with the previous sky Q box.   I thought the issue was the new Sky  Q box so I got Sky to replace it but the same thing happens with the new box.

When the sky Q box is powered on in the morning from the remote, it turns the TV on but shows no picture.   I power cycled it and the picture comes back when you turn on the Sky Q box after the reboot sequence.

I thought it was the box crashing in Eco mode, but noticed the green light was on when it happened the next day so removed the HMDI connector and reinserted it, the picture came back.

I updated the new Q box to Q220.000.22.00L as soon as I received it.

Surely it must be a software issue

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

Mine seems to do it some days and not others.  If I remove the HDMI cable at the back of the tv and put it back in it works again

if I turn off HDMI control, turn on the TV then turn on the W box it works

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

I'm not alone I see. It's damn frustrating, especially when the box is recording, as I cannot afford to reboot it.
Unfortunately for me, taking the HDMI cable out, and putting it in again doesn't help.
If I thought Sky could help, I'd call them, but I just know it would end up with a replacement box, lost recordings, and a reoccurrence at some point down the road.

It does feel like a firmware bug to me, but I would have thought many users would have reported the same fault.

Most strange.

Feels the same to me too.  try turning off HDMI control and see what happens.  Mine seemed to work without it, but it's a pain as you need to switch the TV on and put it on the correct HDMI input

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

I've got so sick of it, I've turned off HMDI contorl.

Lip sync on Sky Sports UHD has been a problem I haven't been able to resolve.  Mega issues with it yesterday but now HDMI control is off, the lip sync problem has gone

PITA not to have HDMI control but better than having to reset the box, or take  the HDMI cable out from the back of the TV

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

I disabled HDMI control also as a test, and it solves my issue, but I'm still in the dark as to why my issue became permanent, when I've not changed anything. I relied on HDMI control to work, as my Harmony remote runs a routine at start-up, switching on my TV, Sky Box, and soundbar. Now I'll either have to ammend the routine, or settle on manually switching. At least I'm getting picture output ok now, but still perplexed.

Lip sync drives me crazy. I have a 100ms delay to allow everything to sync, although Sky Sports F1 can still be a major PITA!

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

@oldgeek did disabling HDMI resolve issues the lip sync issues.  I was surprised that mine did.

Sky had no clue how to deal with the lip sync issues when I contacted them several times.  Standard response was reboot your box, change the resolution, use the delay function.  All absolutely ridiculous answers.

we can't be the only ones with the issues

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

@handyandy72  I do not pass audio through my HDMI cables, so in my case it wouldn't make any difference.

I use optical cables for audio, and have a 100ms delay to keep lip sync away, but audio from Sky Sports F1 can still be plagued by it.

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

Same here. Quickest way to deal with it without waiting for a reboot or potentially interrupting a recording is to remove and reinsert the hdmi cable on back of sky q box. Ridiculous having to do this and Sky need to resolve.

Re: No HDMI Signal Every Time Sky Box is Switched On

Until very recently, I was using a smart switch to power cycle the box, but I could only do this when the box wasn't recording anything. I ended up switching off HDMI control. Not ideal, but unplugging cables wasn't practical with my setup.

as you say, Sky need to resolve this.

Posted by a Superuser, not a Sky employee. Find out more

In the settings menu

doubt someone from Sky is going to reply. And as everyone with this problem has Samsung TVs, I'm thinking the problem lies elsewhere.

@oldgeek  interested why you don't use HDMI for audio? Optical has limitations but maybe you're using an amp with no HDMI input? Great to hear the Harmony is still going. Logi stopped making them didn't they? I still miss my Philips Pronto.
