I would liek to connect my skyQ box to my Asus zenbook

I want to connect my sky Q box to my laptop. I have physically connected them via HDMI. The laptop is windows 11 and asus zenbook with 2 screens. I want to do this as the TV I have the  Q box connected too is broken and I just want to do a simple setup change on the Q without moving it to another TV as the satellite connection is one end of the house. I have a sky mini which is useless at present as it cant see the Q box (this is the quite useless thing about mini boxes the min the Q box isn't there) . So is this possible? I assume the Q is outputting now but how to open up the HDMI on my laptop to receive the signal? please don't suggest sky go that wont help. Any ideas welcome

hi @Famousfamily4

I don't think your Zenbook HDMI is suitable for displaying video from an external source

To receive Satellite TV SIgnals and keep the box alive the SKY Q box must be connected to the Satellite Cables

You mention 2 screens - an extrenal screen is likely to have an HDMI  input (unless they are dsiplayport only) so you should be able to connect SKY Q directly to it although you may not get sound

A laptops hdmi port will not allow you to use it as a monitor source for an external device like Sky Q.

You will need to use either a dedicated PC monitor  that has an inward facing port (not all do) or use a TV.

An HDMI port on a laptop won't do HDMI-in: they are output-only.  There are potential bodges with external HDMI 'capture cards' but those are typically unsatisfactory because viewing is through a software application (and in theory should be blocked by HDCP anyway)

Note that the main Q box doesn't need a television set attached for a Mini box to work, but it does require the main box to be connected to its satellite feed and powered on.

Obviously one potential difficulty is you wouldn't see any relevant error message about reception issues or failure to initialise being generated by the main box.

Re: I would liek to connect my skyQ box to my Asus zenbook

Thank you to all for the responses. I have found a USB hdmi capture device on amazon for £15 that cab then be connected into OSB. I'll try tomorrow to see if that works. Also I found an obvious workaround, I connected an external mini £50 projector that we have and that obviously solves it. I already had the Q connected to Internet and satellite I just needed to reinitialise the viewing card before it would work with the mini again.  All done.thanks again everyone what a nuisance a laptop screen cant be used   also quick one my laptop has 2 screens integral just to answer one query. Happy weekend all

Re: I would liek to connect my skyQ box to my Asus zenbook

You can't connect your Asus Zenbook to your SKYbox or minibox. You can only view SKY on your Asus Zenbook via SKYGo whether you like it or not!. If youhave wifi problems due to a weak signal, being so far away from the router, you can buy a Wifi extender. I can watch SKY in my shed whciich is about 40 metres from my Router. I bought TP-LINK 300M WiFi Extender Booster & 600Mbper second Powerline kit from Argos for £44.99 from Argos. Now have Wifi signal anywhere on my property/grounds.

Re: I would liek to connect my skyQ box to my Asus zenbook

Thanks, wifi isn't the problem I was trying to overcome but thanks for the tips. Ive personally found powerline adapters a bit hit-and-miss (been using for 10 years)}. First off, they really only work if all of your property is off the same ELCb or main electrical distribution board. I have at least 3 at my place and some outdoor places are on separate circuits. Powerlines seldom work in these situations and certainly don't work across 3 phase systems.  but thanks anyway
