Connecting LG OLED TV, Blu-Ray Disc System & Sky Q

Hi

I'm hoping somone can assist me.  I am looking for the best way to connect  my new LG OLED48C226LB tv to my old Harmon Kardon BDS580 3D Blu-ray Disc system (I'll call "HK box")and Sky Q box to ensure I have full UHD HDR picture quality and 5:1 surround sound. 

I currently have my TV connected to the "HK box" via HDMI; then a HDMI connection from  the "HK box" to TV.  I'm just not sure if this is going to be the best way to get full UHD HDR picture quality going 'via' my old "HK box"?   

I should add that the "HK box" is only used for surround sound, not watching blu-ray discs.

I presume you mean SKY TV connected to eth HK box. 

I am not sure (in fact I don't think) that the HK system will pass the full 4K HDR signal from SKY Q

Whilst I usually recommend plugging SKY Q into AV units to minimise the chanes of Lipsynch errors I only do so when the AV equipment is capable of full 4K HDR pass through.

I think your HK unit is slightly too old for this & the HDMI is listed as HDMI 1.4 not 2.0

As you have an LG OLED Tv I recommend connecting SKY Q to the LG Tv and using the TV's ARC connection to your HK system

BTW to make sure you are getting full 4K HDR on your TV make sure you have set up the HDMI to allow this - Off the top of my head I think the LG setting is called Deep Color - also make sure you have a SKY Q box which has a hardware version 32B1xxx or 32B2xxx & not 32B0xxx (as this is 4K but not HDR)

Thank you for your reply.  Yes, sorry, I meant the "HK box" connects to Sky Q.  

You have answered my 'concern' in that my current set up wont work as my "HK box" is too old.  I should have said in my original post that within the settings of my "HK box" it does give me the picture option of UHD - even though UHD wouldn't have been a 'thing' at the time of purchase of my HK system.  Would this make any difference to what you previously advised?

Thank you for mentioning the HDR capabilities of my Sky Q box.  I am awaiting a replacement Sky Q from Sky as mine was not compatible.

I think this is just to allow some degree of 4K upscaling from Blu-ray

When 3D was around 4K was only just beginning and HDR not part of it

(P.S. I still miss some of my old 3D films after switching to OLED)
