How can I protect my sim and set up lock when I can't remember my password

I have a sky sim which can be locked for additional security. It comes with a PIN code, but I cannot remember it or even know if I set it up when the new sim came, if you try a pin too many times with a SIM card it locks the phone totally. There are no instructions or information on how to change the password or even what the default settings may have been. This is what I need to sort out and Sky seem to struggle to understand this on the phone chat...
