No SMS services in Japan

OK, I have restrospectively learned that Sky stopped its data agreements in Japan (and Taiwan) in mid-February, but I am really concerned that not even SMS texts are allowed -- nor is it any kind of add-on that I can pay for to regain access. 

Appreciate that I can get a local SIM, but I cannot afford to have apps like Banking asking me to re-register the device the moment I pop a local phone number in during a time abroad where I require access to these apps. 

Is there an alternative method that I can receive my OTP requests for mobile banking/local services requiring a phone number, or am I going to be left on "No Signal" for the duration of my 2-month trip?

Realistically 2 options.

Move banking to a provider that doesn't use SMS OTP.

Move phone number to provider that supports Japan.

Hi @waaGB  nothing that I am aware of. Perhaps contact your bank and see if it can be done using WhatsApp, using free WiFi when available will allow the use of WhatsApp/ messenger etc, these use data rather than a mobile signal.

Same problem meaning I cannot get texts authorising payments etc. 

I will be ditching Sky mobile and moving to a new provider as soon as I return

Sky roaming is no longer available in Japan at all.
