My phone has randomly switched itself off, tried to put it and noticed my phone case looked funny at the back so took off the case and the back of the phone has separated

Sounds like the battery has expanded, if so then not only will it require a replacement battery but a replacement back - if it can be repaired. Do you have AppleCare on the device? If so you can claim a repair from them.
