Data usage when first turn on phone in another country

When you reach your destination abroad, and you first switch on your phone, how do I stop all my data being eaten up creating charges by updating my phone with messages etc.

On an iPhone (for example) you can decide which app's use mobile data.  Only enable it on apps you want to use data with.  (Other makes will have similar settings)

Hi @ghvb to ensure no charges then the only way I have found works every time is turn off mobile data and roaming then activate flight mode before leaving the UK (even doing it on the plane has sometimes still incurred charges) and when you arrive only turn on WiFi whilst still in flight mode and use free WiFi when available.

@ghvb

On an iPhone (and might be on an android phone as well) there is a setting to update on Wi-Fi only.
