Sky glass picture settings suggestion

Hey all

Since I had my sky glass last week I feel like I've spent more time looking for suggestions of display settings than watching the tv. 

I've spent a while over the last few days flicking channels/testing different times of day to try and get a good quality setting so you don't need to keep flicking to/from vivid. These settings may not be for everyone but we thought they majorly improved the image quality for both hdr and uhd.

I haven't tested uhd with sports but did the hdr settings using cricket on sky mix, bits of football on sky sports news and snooker on Eurosports. they seemed to work well but do comment below if not or any suggestions as I see this is often a popular crisiticim of the visual settings. 

for uhd please note you need to have the relevant uhd subscription, then to input the settings either open a uhd channel, play a uhd movie (either through sky via on demand style not the channels, labelled uhd in prime or Dolby atmos in Netflix). 

you will then need to do the hdr settings aswell by opening a tv channel such as bbc1 or itv1. 

if you don't have uhd only follow the hdr settings and select hdr for streaming format not auto.

I forgot to say in my initial post I've put 'march 2023' as nearly all the settings I see circulating round the net related to pre dec22 when the visulations upgrade came in.

So if I've got this right if I have UHD pack (yes I have) I'll need to apply 2 sets of settings for UHD content (anything you'd recommend?) And the different ones for say BBC1 right?

If you have a uhd package and/or subscription then start playing something in uhd or dolby vision (for netflix) then go to the display settings menu and they will alter those for uhd. 

For hdr they are separate settings, so even if youve done the above open something like bbc1 or itv1 and input the hdr settings. 

they are 2 different lots of settings and you'll note my settings differ for them too.

You are confusing HDR with HD here. There is no HDR content on BBC1 or ITV1. There is no HDR content on ITVX and a handful of shows in UHD with HDR on iPlayer, but nothing on the live streams of BBC or ITV channels.

HDR is meant to be HD (I.e. all your HD channels such as bbc1, bbc2, itv, etc etc)

HDR is same as UHD in regards to my reference of these settings. I can't edit the post unfortunately.

Does Sky Glass differ it's picture settings when in Dolby Vision or HDR or are they the same? 

I get that that BBC1 hd is just that and seperate.

Yeah they're different settings but up to you if you wanted them to differ, like I have above. 

When you go into display settings whilst a hd channel is on you'll notice they differ when you go in the same settings whilst something hdr is playing.

Why have you with UHD content have Sharpness set to 50 that's not normal for 4K TV's when viewing 4K content

The default setting is 0

I will test your picture settings at the weekend 

Testing image from UHD discs from my UHD Blu-ray player connected to Sky Glass

As in test to see if image detail especially in dark scenes is affected as in test to see if black crushing happens

Lord of the Rings has lot of dark scenes If a TV has wrong picture settings you will notice image detail missing 

I know pictures settings are personal choice that will differ for some people depending on viewing room light conditions 

It's important though when you do change picture settings you don't cause that to effect a film to loose image details content 

As in a dark scene not be missing objects in background that's meant to be seen

If picture settings are done wrong on 4K tv's  that can result in missing detail with image and artificial sharpening effects happen

I have a huge film collection  on physical media Blu-ray and UHD discs over 3,000 discs 

Artificial sharpening effects happen if sharpness is set wrong on a 4K TV

Ive often seen Sony sets (owned 2) who imply sharpness set to 50 percent had less than the effect at zero..

I guess it's just what looks right.

With regards uhd settings coincidentally there could be an alternate choice coming  later. I had a message yesterday about an issue with these when watching darker movies (the example provided was dark knight). However I just need to test the alternate set in daytime too. 

in regards to your comments about sharpness, it's all personal choice and you're welcome to amend them as you prefer or not use them at all. Most people are just using vivid but I wasn't happy with it as I believe backlight is set to auto in that setup. but trying to find some settings to use since the last software update was impossible hence this post to hopefully help others. 

these alternate uhd settings  will also be another set that will be down to preference as the colours are more 'punchy' to assist with the darkness issues, but I also know some people may not like a punchy colour settings in films hence they will be an  alternate set and not replace the initial ones I posted.

Most people are not using vivid

Majority are using Auto 

I would never use vivid as that is not a natural accurate  picture setting on any Tv 

A 4K TV should never be using artificial sharpening when viewing 4K content as you would not see a accurate image if you do this
