@Dannyboy157 please unmark @MarkGoldsmith post as the answer. Because it is not. Let's help others who might have the same question and keep things factual.

@MarkGoldsmith  Simply not true. The BBC would love everyone to believe this is the case, but the law is quite clear on the matter: it is the act of watching or recording live television programmes or using BBC iPlayer that requires a TV Licence - it is not required for simply having receiving equipment. It is its use for the purpose of live TV viewing that does.

That is the main reason why the TV License is under review😉

The "I never watch any live TV not even on YouTube" claim is easy to make ... but for how many is it absoluely true ... 1 sec of live TV in a year means you watched live TV and must have a TV license😉

Re: Do i need a tv license.

So, if I watch Sky sports live ( which I have with sky broadband service) - do I still need TV licence.

Though I'm watching live but not through smart TV app but its through the sky stream.

Hope my query makes sense?

Re: Do i need a tv license.

@CKiran710

UK

Yes you need a TV License when watching Sky Sports live broadcast regardless if you using Sky Stream

UK

You need a TV license if you watch  any live broadcast.

It applies to all channels that are a live broadcast regardless what device you using or what country the tv channel is based.

Republic of Ireland  is even more strict.

You need a TV license if you have Sky Glass or Sky Stream even if you don't watch any live broadcast as both devices are capable of receiving a live broadcast from EPG

Both devices also have an aerial input

Sky Glass has an aerial input and works when no internet connection active so a TV licence is still required even if you dont use the TV

You also still need a TV licence even if a TV is broken as it can be repaired.

Sky Stream even if you are connecting to a monitor as it has an aerial input you still need a TV Licence even though the aerial connection it's not active at the moment it's possible sky may enable it a later stage in Ireland.

@Sidhu1  Your other post in the Sky Q forum has been removed as a duplicate.

All channels that are on the TV Guide are classed as live channels, all would need a TV licence there are no exceptions to this.

A list really isn't needed.

As @GD1 indicates, the TV Licence is permission to carry out licenceable activity at the specified address: that is 'watching television as it is being broadcast' plus any use of iPlayer, live or on-demand.

The licencing conditions aren't linked to any particular channels, and avoiding certain channels does not remove the necessity for it if any live viewing happens at all.

A TV Licence covers you to:
  • Watch or record TV on any channel on any TV service (like Sky, Virgin Media and Freeview).
  • Watch live on streaming services (like ITVX, All 4, YouTube and Amazon Prime Video).
  • Use BBC iPlayer*
This applies to any device, including a TV, computer, laptop, phone, tablet, games console or digital box.

If you want to watch some licence free comedy: Parliament TV is viewable live without the need to purchase a BBC TV Licence.

ITV receives no funding from TH licence so is in theory not covered by a TV license ITV (Independant Television) paid for by add space

It's irrelevant who gets the money from the Tv license. If you watch live TV regardless of the channel you need a license.

The legislation says 'TV channels' and 'live TV' without specifying any brand in particular.  The License Fee income subsequently being allocated to the BBC (and S4C) isn't significant in the context of that section.

The requirement to hold a TV Licence and to pay a fee for it is mandated by law under the Communications Act 2003 and the Communications (Television Licensing) Regulations 2004 (as amended). It is an offence under section 363 of the Communications Act 2003 to watch TV channels on any TV service, watch live TV on streaming services, or use BBC iPlayer, on any device, without a valid TV Licence.

Re: Do i need a tv license.

ITVX is free to view and you do not need a TV Licence to watch stuff on it, that's why ITV made it.
I think BBC should now be like Netflix now and we should have a choice to support the BBC or not(most people will support it if they want it) and not faused to pay it because your watching Live TV, Live TV should be free to view by now,, Why call it Freewiew or Freely, it not free to view, I pay a TV Licence because of Sky and do not watch any BBC channels on Sky Stream, I don't even watch the new U channels that were UKTV that are part of the BBC too, like U+Gold, U+Drama, you can't see them on the TV Listing on Sky Steam because I never added them, BBC is to political, ITV is better and independent from the Government, ITV News is better.
I don't like how the BBC is run now and its been stranlged by the TV Licance.
The last time I watched the BBC was Doctor Who and Peter Capaldi was the Doctor.

I was a PC Engineer and fix peoples PCs by going to there house, Windows XP was known to slow down PCs over time and clog up the PCs RAM and its start-up and had to reinstall it for the customer, the only way you could fix WinXP.

Incorrect - if you are watching one of the live streams via ITV X you do need a TV license.
