Was the account really hacked?

I have recieved an email from a Sky account belonging to someone I have a restraining order against, which legally forbids them from attempting to contact me by any means (obviously, including by email).

They have claimed that their Sky account was 'hacked', and that the account hacker send the email, but the style of writing and wording leave me suspicious.  It's seems unlikely that a hacker would research the ancient history of my dealings with the account holder (from many years ago) to establish some facts, and then study their style of writing sufficiently to emulate it perfectly.

Is there a way I can find out if their account has been reported to Sky as having been "hacked" as they claim?

If you're not the account holder then I doubt Sky would tell you anything.

Virginia.
I don’t work for Sky.

@Norma_Withering Sky wouldn't necessarily know that their account had been hacked. And even if they did, they wouldn't be able to tell you one way or the other because data protection requirements.

It's common for someone who has gained unauthorised access to an emal account, to send spurious emails to the accountholder's listed contacts. I would think it unlikely, though, that a hacker would search through your email history to establish the details of previous emails and respond to them, in a manner similar to yours.

Even if you are the account holder Sky wouldn't be able to tell you anything as it is Yahoo who run the email service.

All you can do is to report it to the authorities.
