latency spikes to external servers

Every few seconds my ping jumps up to anywhere between 400ms and 800ms, which is making gaming online impossible. I saw another poster with the same issue but without a solution.

I have pinged the sky hub and it's consistently 2 or 3ms. But when pinging an external server (such as 8.8.8.8) probably one in every five packets has a latency of around 700ms.

An engineer was sent over a week ago and they just replaced the hub and did a DLM reset which unsurprisingly hasn't helped at all.

@LostWoods how is your gaming device networked? If its over WiFi by far the most likely issue is that the WiFi signal is suffering from interference. This is why ethernet connections are always preferred over wifi with powerline networking being a good second choice.

However you can still get latency issues due to other factors including the load on the Sky hub - gaming routers use QOS to prioritise gaming traffic but ISP's free hubs dont - so if you share thr connection with others thst can be a factor. If the server is in the UK Sky's routing is unlikely to be a factor but pretty obviously that may not apply if the server is say on the West Coast of the US. Lastly and surprisingly common is the server simply being overloaded.

Sky give no guarantees on latency which can be frustrating but given most of the factors are outside their control is understandzble.
