connection loss

our broadband connection drops out when the landline rings, is this to do with the filter

More than likely yes. 

Is your broadband router connected to the same socket as your phone? If so are you using a microfilter or prefiltered faceplate?

 

If you have your phone connected to a separate extension socket you'll need a filter for that too.

 

If it helps you could attach some photos of your setup.

the phone and modem go into the same adsl filter and the same socket

Sounds like you may have a faulty filter then. I'd recommend getting a new one to see if it solves your issue
