Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

I've just set my Orbi up directly connected to the Openreach Modem (ONT)

You have to enable IPv6 on the orbi web login (cant do on the app) on the advanced section then IPv6 plug the ethernet in the internet port on orbi and the ONT and it just works 🙂

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

Has anyone had any joy with a Nest Router on FTTP? Cheers

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

As theres no need for log ins to the modem, doing this should have it up and running

@CallMeSteve you will need to be more specific as to what you mean by "this" and what service you are buying from Sky. This because what will work with FTTP connected to a ONT unit may not work on Sky FTTC services which use a copper phoneline. This thread has got messy as people are discussing both types of service.

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

@DaneBC I've recently purchased a Netgear Orbi and it worked fine to begin with except the internet drops after 24 hours and then requires a rooter reboot to fix it.  Sounds like something to do with the assigned IP address not renewing maybe? What settings do you have for IPv6?

I've enabled IPv6 in the Orbi web interface, but for IP Address Assignment I have selected "Use DHCP Server" rather than "Auto Config". For the DHCP Server option I've selected it mentions that "some IPv6 systems might not support the DHCv6 client function."

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

Oh no, I was thinking mine was faulty and was going to exchange it. I've currently got it on a smart plug rebooting at 4am each day (not the worst thing in the world) my main issue I'm. Having is what's app and Facebook messenger often don't want to connect for ages then sometimes it works fine

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

@Outsharked did you get your Nest Hub working (or anyone else?).

I have Google WiFi, and am just checking if it works before I switch.

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

@DaneBCI think I may have fixed the issue where the internet stops working after 24 hours with the Netgear Orbi.

In the Web console for the Orbi go to Advanced -> Setup -> Internet Setup and then in the DHCP section set Client Identifier String (Option 61) to "username@skydsl|mypass" then click Apply

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

Hi All, just thought I'd piggyback on this thread rather than starting a new one. I'm currently on sky broadband superfast and it's FTTC in my area. I've purchased an Asus RT-AX86U to use as a router and have the BT Openreach modem that I was given when I first signed up to sky fibre before Sky Q hub came along etc..

I plan on connecting the modem to the wall socket, then connect the modem to the router on the WAN socket. I'm seeing mixed info online as to whether I need to put anything in the client identifier value for option 61.  Should I just try this or does the client identifier value need to be populated with something ? Any other config I need to make on the router ?

@Fr0dders

Client identifier needs populated  as this is how sky authenticates the device . To be 100% accurate as asus can be quite picky in the format input

12 character asus mac address|last 6 digits of mac

Eg in the format

12345678abcd@skydsl|78abcd

Also bare in mind the seperate modem probably hasn't had a firmware update for ages and is now obsolete . Give it a go anyway just be prepared to having to buy a stand alone vdsl2 modem that can be put in modem bridge mode such as the draytek vigor 130.

Re: Using third party router with Sky FTTP

Any tips on how to work out what those values are ? I take it the router MAC address can be found in the DD-WRT Merlin router admin config somewhere ?  And what is the second mac address ?

Forgive me if the questions seem stupid - first time i've used DD-WRT and the configuration options are endless. Lots to learn!
