Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Hi everyone, I recently got the 5gbps fibre broadband installed in my home, however I wasn't personally home and my parents were but they are old and don't know much about internet or care for it, but for me, a 20 year old gamer, it was a childhood dream come true.

I have my pc wired up to the router via Cat7 Ethernet. It's less than 30 metres long. It's probably less than 10 to be honest.

So why is it that my Cat7 cable which is supposed to withstand 10gbps of speed only cap the router to send my pc (which is of very high end equipment and definitely capable of handling more than 5gbps of internet speed, let alone it has a built in Wifi 6E Card with antennas), 2.5gbps in my internet settings. Upon running an ookla speedtest, and many other speed test websites, it only really shows me 2.0-2.2gbps which obviously isn't even the guaranteed 2.5 AT LEAST. I tried disconnecting every device in my home and left my pc to be the only one connected. Still same problem. I am debating buying a Cat8 Ethernet cable to see if it'll make a difference. Only issue being, I'm upstairs, router is downstairs, I drilled holes in the wall to wire the ethernet through my house to reach my pc. So if I wanted a Cat8, I'd need to redrill and that's effort.

Any suggestions? Or is this a bust?

Have you disabled the pc's WiFi and ensure the correct setting are selected on the lan card for the higher speeds?

what speed does the router return in the my sky app for your connection to the hub?

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Yes, I disabled wifi, I even took out the wifi card, which was over the top lol. I have a feeling, POSSIBLY, I don't actually have a 5Gbps NIC (Network Interface Card). But I haven't checked to be honest.

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

You need to check the device and the setting to see if that is the issue and also check the speed to the hub to see if it is an issue with the city fibre install

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Yeah, I believe I have a 2.5Gbps NIC, I need to purchase a 5/10Gbps NIC. But don't know which one reputable. Got any suggestions?

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

what speeds are you getting through wifi?

the main selling point for the gigafast+ is to allow multiple devices to connect at high speeds at the same time as most hardware is not capible of connecting at 5Gbps

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Okay, I'm going to go for this card, do you think it'll be okay? I mean it states it has 5gbps ethernet cap. NIC Card

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Have you checked the hub is connected at the max speed yet? Do you have the relevant internal connections spare on your pc?

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Yes I have spare PCIe 4x Ports for the NIC.

On phone, it averages 200 or less mbps, which I don't know if it's normal or not, but it's like usable, with very low latency. On PC. I believe the results are tragic because the router is very far away from it, and my PC is under the table which just has lots of obstructions.

I am getting 50 mbps and 108 ping latency on my PC with Wi-fi only.

Also just checked my motherboards specifications, and I definitely only have a 2.5G Lan port, so I will definitely buy that 5G card and let you know. I should get it tomorrow.

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

My ethernet cable is connected to the spare 10Gbps Lan port on the back of the router. It is already taking the maximum speed. Just my PC (the recepient, doesn't have the hardware to handle it, but it will tomorrow hopefully!)

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Scratch that, the NIC card will come on monday.

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

@IonPlinge With a 2.5Gb/s Ethernet and a wifi 6e turned on and combined throughput your Win 11 PC should have handled it fine, speed test's may not like it to much but the Resource monitor should have given you a better idea, 10Gb/s Ethernet is what will be required, and think the new Gigafast+ hub has that on it's Lan interface, if not it surely will be 5Gb/s!

Your Network settings properties will show you all you need regarding sync's on it, if you do have two high speed devices local on the network even better for testing, i easily stick 2.2Gb/s internal on a 5 year old wifi5 laptop with a 1Gb/s Ethernet combined!

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

Enjoy I only have the 1gbps via openreach but manage 600mbps via WiFi at the other end of my house

could get more but get moaned at for moving the hub to a better position

Re: Slow 5Gigabit Internet?

@JimM1 you're correct, it has a 10Gbps Lan port on the back right above the WAN where the fibre connects to the router. That's where my Cat7 Ethernet is out of into my PC. Problem being I need a 5Gbps NIC (Network Interface Card) to support it. It's currently only 2.5Gbps. I ordered one, as stated above, and it'll come monday. After installation, I shall come back to this thread and let you guys know what's happening.
