@Archfarchnad Sky can have throughput issues but they are compatatively rare. To rule out other possible causes could there be other traffic is using the network when you measure speeds? Do not assume because you are the only user thst your other devices are not active as many update automatically during periods they are not in use. Also what speed test you use can be a factor for example Fast.com has been shown to be unreliable as it tests connection speeds to Netflix servers which only require a maximum of 40Mb/s and give varying results on faster lines. Ookla who run Speedtest.net seem reliable. You will never get the full speed of any connection as you lose roughly 10% to network overheads but I assume you know that.

Are you on a full fibre to your home connection as if you get Ultrafast over copper there are other factors that can cause speed variation. The G.Fast system that uses is prone to issues which are in essence unavoidable which is partially why Openreach have stopped rolling out that technology and switched to full fibre.

Strangely I have friends who would do the exact opposite to get away from Virgin onto an Openreach full fibre network.its a case of greener grass and fences I guess..

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Hi,

Back again.

Ok. I think there are a few points here I want to address. First off you mention 10% overhead for network itself. I appreciate that there will be some overheard but doubt it would be that much but to be honest coming in as a customer, I dont care...... Not my problem. If a speed is advertised then surely Sky would factor that in.

Next point is that its not just about the speed, its also about the quality of the line. As I have mentioned when using Virgin i found that it was consistent regardless of what anyone in the house was doing, it was also consistent in it broadcasting. Now however im finding that  this 145mb speed is actually less consistent and bounces up and down like a yo-yo and isnt a solid connection providing anywhere near the speeds even when hardwired which I have had to resort to for my work.

Last point, I went all in recently and upgraded to the full 500mb monty. My dream was if I have to pay some more then so be it. Now last night for example , I had one person on iPlayer (which I know is not the most efficient), one on netflix (which is pretty efficient) and one on Warcraft which is also pretty efficient. Now with 500mb my hope would have been to have had all that run quite smoothly considering a few years ago when I had 4mb I could run warcraft and netflix without any issue (not iPlayer as well however but then its 4mb). So why am i struggling with 500mb....

So in summery the router is pretty poor for wifi, no getting away from that and I can live with it if somethings have to be wired. However what I cant get away from is I have 500mb and the house hold still cant do what they want to do.  Poor.......

Im stuck with this for the moment unless I move or my prays are answered and a proper fibre broadband is laid down to the front of my house and we know who that would be....

Oh last note, I am not naive enough to think that Virgin are great and people never have problems with them, of course they do. Just not in my experience.. (so far)..

Yours disappointed

Sky Customer

@Archfarchnad

There are plenty of ISP that will service your property with broadband over BT Openreach's FTTP network, and some have far better wireless routers than Sky! Why not switch to an alternative internet service provider? I can recommend Zen Internet... 😀

-------

Zen internet on FTTP (900Mbps down, 100Mbps up). SAT> IP (Apple 4K 2nd gen TV to LG C1 OLED UHD TV/Dolby Atmos Denon AVR, DacMagic Plus for Hi-Res audio), hosting own blog/forum (cluster), OPNsense & Zenarmor L4/L7 NGFW & DPI IDS/IPS, Asus ET12 Pro Tri-Band wifi, Linux, Gamer: Xbox Series X/i7 laptop, round-robin DNS over HTTPS, non-proprietary VoIP HD AMR-WB (G.722.2) and more... Beta tester Apple iOS/watchOS/tvOS/iPadOS/macOS.

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Sky wifi is generally the worst wifi ever, my son games and he is always complaining about it chipping out. Even on my phone its bad. 0/10

@donna99999 while Sky's hubs dont have the best wifi but they certainly aren't the worst. Simple fact is the laws of physics means in many homes you need multiple wifi points especially in older properties with solid walls. There is also the issue with interference from neighbouring networks and from your own electrical equipment.

There are many ways to improve wifi from simply moving the hub higher so the signal isnt blocked by radiators snd furniture, through using boosters to buying a whole home wifi mesh system. This is a good place to start Sky Help - Slow wifi

Re: Sky wifi sucks

It's absolutely shocking! And they apparently upgraded my WiFi but it's just got worse! Sky sort it out! I will be leaving sky after over 15 years with them! When I called the package I was paying over £120 a month for wasn't even a package anymore but didn't even bother contacting me about it for years!!! I mean what's that about! Absolutely terrible! And the customer service is even worse! Make me sick!!!

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Hi, jumping on this thread as it seems to adequately match my issue.  I recently moved to sky internet from another Openreach distributor and am really disappointed with how frequently the wifi drops.

Ive bought some powerline repeaters to try and mitigate issues through the house, but my wife and child are sat next to the router right now complaining about how useless it is.  Is there likely to be any issue with me just plugging in my old router into the fibre connector and binning the shiny white junk?

Re: Sky wifi sucks

Hi I got sky to send me a new router and it did stop dropping out and all was great but now after some months later it's started loosing Internet and resetting itself ok not as much as the last one did so I'm not sure if it's the routers they use or it's there Internet...so might be worth trying one of your own and see how it goes
